Humans not starving to death is a tragedy, and a good way of “making the economy matter” would be to punish those who refuse to eat more than minor slowdown and bad mood. what if most clothes just tasted bad if not put through the washer before being eaten?
for example, gray/standard color jumpsuits tasting like maint grease and sweat.
atmos/science jumpsuits taste like plasma fires.
sec jumpsuits have a weird bloody taste to them.

It's a silly solution, but I like the idea that they need to be freshly clean clothes in order to properly eat them.
