Permaban for a stupid incident is a bit much. I agree the player's actions were perhaps irresponsible, but curiosity and experimentation is a thing. We've all messed up somewhere along the line.

But the wiki specifically states that emagging the meteor sat does nothing good. I argue that curiosity isn’t a valid reason when the information is right there for you to read.

It is much more enjoyable to sate your curiosity by experimenting in-game than to read the Wiki, and I don’t think anyone should be faulted for not reading the Wiki.

Besides, even if there’s a chance nothing bad would happen, it still does nothing good in general. It doesn’t help anything at all, and it has the intention of increasing chances in their favor in order to cause destruction to the station. In this case, it is opening themself to being accused of grief.

There is a large part of this game, I’m sure you’d agree, which is “huh I wonder what this does *does the thing.” It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that. A cost-benefit analysis and outside research shouldn’t have to be done on every little mechanic before you try it out. That said if your test causes grief and damage you open yourself to getting slapped for it - but did it in this case?

The gravgen story and the fact they sought out the emag means some sort of ban is probably justified but “denied, come back in a year” feels excessively harsh for something that didn’t cause any damage (unless it did, in which case I retract all statements and posts).

there is good faith experimenting and things going wrong like trying something new with SM

there is bad faith experimenting like stealing an uplink from sec to buy an emag and then use it along with an antag to create CRAZY meteor chances (as nonantag)

it sucks seeing permabans but if you cant follow simple rules and keep your griefing in your pants atleast until you roll you can find other places to play

Objectively yes.
At least one catastrophic wave spawned after he emagged the shields, and the station was less defended for this one because two more shields were emagged.

Just to add onto this,
I managed to find the random event logs for triggered meteors.
The two shield sats that I emagged, only triggered one catastrophic wave.
12:42:32 GAME Random Event triggering: Meteor Wave: Catastrophic (/datum/round_event/meteor_wave/catastrophic).

The 12:42 one was four minutes BEFORE I emagged a shield sat for the first time.

Before this there had been three waves of meteors and the catastrophic

Emagged meteor shields no longer function as meteor shields, they just increase probability of meteor events while active.

There's no way some of those didn't hit the station. Every meteor spawned after 12:46:12(the time he started emagging) is also Chip's fault, because we don't know if they would've spawned if Devin hadn't set the meteor spawn chance to a ridiculous number.

Edit: having done so I'm 50-50. There are some concerning notes (for admins: the one "weird" one in particular is concerning compared to this episode). I think I'd have given a large but finite ban, like a month or so. OTOH I'm definitely more lenient than the average admin

Speaking of notes, he appears to have a colorful history in fulp, but after going through his appeals I can't help but feel sorry for him. I find it hard to believe this break is gonna help him reflect and change his behavior, though to be honest a tiny part of myself still thinks I can be proven wrong. Hopefully the latter will be the outcome of this.

"Hm, the wiki is out of date on a lot of things, I wonder if this thing still has bad results" should not get "Maybe the wiki is out of date and it does something good, I'm going to go out of my way to try it as a non-antag." it should get "I'm going to ask someone, or try it when I'm an antag."

Even assuming good faith, it was very much the wrong choice, and if he has a history as long as mine (from over 2 years of playing), in only this month alone, there comes the point you have to ask if letting him stay is just griefing the players.

Pumpkin never stated the damage caused, they specifically said “that may or may not” have caused damage. DoB also is making an assumption that the meteors caused damage, maybe it’s a reasonable one, again no one knows what tangible impact this actually had except the people there in the round.

I think giving him the same sentence that he’d get if he were to bomb the entire station into smithereens with no survivors and then stick the finger up at the admin, is a little much yeah. Month or two would’ve been fine and accomplished the same goal.
