I think giving people second chances is very important and healthy. However, the expected compromise is that when you're given a second chance, you accept responsibility for your actions and stop what got you banned in the first place.

There are certain things we need to be strict about, like rule 8 or 11 violations, but we also need to clamp down on people who are doing stuff to intentionally ruin other peoples' fun.

I don't mind letting someone else back who's willing to appeal if it's been long enough and they haven't gone off to fuck up another server, but I'm not the type to wave off someone doing something like plasma flooding as a non-antag. If you're here to grief, you're going to be removed. If you decide you want to come back and play in earnest, I'll give you another shot, but if you fuck up again, that's not happening a second time.

I have a hypothesis.

The gamemasters and admins that makeup the body of people who decide how rules will be enforced are mostly people who don’t actively play much anymore, perhaps 1-2 rounds a week (and that’s the upper end). As a result their rounds are much, much more precious than the rounds of someone who plays 5 times a day. If their round gets ruined, that was a whole week of SS13 ruined which will probably turn them off from the game more than it would someone who played 4 other rounds that went fine right after. Unfortunately that also means they’re more liable to formulate opinions based off of this anecdotal experience, which is a mistake when your experience is sparse and not indicative of the “average” round.

This is why some of the best game admins in my experience are admins that play regularly or, failing that, played a ton in the past but still pop in semi-regularly for a round. Else you risk sort of losing the thread of SS13 and getting all weird and bureaucratic with your enforcement, like you have an agenda, as opposed to just a player with admin perms that wants to improve people’s rounds.

Actually I can summarize all this:

Good admins love SS13. They enjoy playing it, they enjoy the community, and they enjoy how things are.

Bad admins hate SS13 like you’d hate a lover after the relationship has become toxic and parasitic, but you’re stuck with them because ripping the bandaid off is harder than just tolerating it. So you’re frustrated and bitter.

The above applies to players too BTW but when the players go bad they just become soulless husks instead of bureaucratic banbots — which is worse is arguable.
