The real issue are the bans and notes that AREN’T appealed. That no one would even know existed… Because most players don’t feel like arguing with an obstinate admin over something they already disagree about and then requesting headmin review (which most players don’t know exists anyway).

Imagine how many of these sorts of bans and notes there are on a constant basis, in all likelihood ones far worse than this.

Vekter was within his right auto-locking and shuffling off the thread but man. It wouldn’t hurt to rethink this and correct the decision.

Short of flexing a little headmin power in the backchannels we're unlikely to jump in and outright overrule an admin outside of an appeal unless the decision to act was manifestly unfounded in all the circumstances; not even technically appropriate. A situation where the player should not be expected to waste their time appealing because they should never have been put in that position to begin with.

And a key problem with allowing exceptions that players must appeal their own bans are our rules on denied appeals and re-appealing the same non-permanent ban multiple times. A denied appeal has tangible consequences to the appellant. We can't allow proxy appeals because it invites complaints that the 3rd party fucked the appeal up in some way.

I think this is one of those cases where if the player did appeal it there may be a different outcome. But... The act of building the BSA in a public location pointing in a dangerous direction may attract admin attention on the most technical of levels so I don't think I'm willing to support looking deeper into this without the player appealing it themself and putting their reasonings and goals to the record.

What's left out here is that they built the BSA in the bar on Meta facing west, meaning the beam fires out and hits people as they get off the arrivals shuttle. His reason for doing it sucked ("lol it's funny") and I punished him because he should have better sense than to build something that's going to cut a giant hole in the station somewhere that will not only cut the station in half but round remove people who literally just joined.

The only thing I did wrong here was not also bonk the heads for unlocking it, but there's a potential argument that they didn't know he'd built it in the bar.

As for concerns about the note impacting his history, he doesn't have much of one and I can't imagine it would have an effect unless he did something similarly reckless, ie leaving a maxcap bomb out with the signaler nearby.

and man, if you can’t see the merit of building the BSA in the bar, I don’t know what to tell you. there’s a degree of letting shit happen because it’s funny and gives the round some personality, even if it’s a bit risky. why does everything have to be so safety proofed? banning for this type of thing is actively making the game worse, no one needed you to do this.

I'm talking about the heads unlocking the BSA, which allows it to be fired by anyone. The specific case I banned the player for here was for an antag using the BSA to shoot someone who'd just walked off the shuttle, so the person who fired it would not be punished because they were an antagonist and per rule 4 could use it to do whatever they wanted.

I acknowledged that I should have said something to the people who unlocked it (I was unable to locate the logs that said they'd done so and was working off the assumption that it wasn't logged; now that I know it is I will likely go back and have words with them over it) but that doesn't negate the issue I have with the BSA being built in an extremely stupid place for an extremely stupid reason.
