I haven't read it since high school, but if I recall correctly, Fortunado's family basically ruined Montresor's. Like, completely fucked them over, caused them to lose everything. It's a revenge story, the irony being that Fortunado doesn't realize what's happening to him until it's far, far too late to do anything about it.

E: Also I still think this is Poe's best story, Telltale Heart enjoyers seething
