Speaking of gravel about two years ago the house five down got a pile of gravel delivered. Right in the front lawn. They even bothered to drop a tarp first so it wouldn't kill the grass.

And then the pile hasn't moved this entire time.

I used to live about a quarter mile from this giant quarry in Nashville. It was over by the airport on the east side of town. Not the airport normal people use. The airport for custom planes and stuff. Our aeronautics office was out there for a few while as they were redoing the one at the main airport. Anyways I drove past this quarry four times a day because I would go home over lunch. They started doing some new kind of blasting and hit a patch of some weird gas, so I would drive home and think that my car had a leak or that I had spilled gas on my pants while filling up but eventually found out it was the quarry. It was impossible to keep my car clean. Eventually they held a big fish fry announcing that they were making a bridge so the trucks didn't have to go through the neighborhood and could go right to 840. I talked to one of the people in charge and the manager, they were with Rogers group. I asked if they knew any of my projects and he said no. I described one in more detail that had just let. He said no. I figured oh well they probably bid on it but didn't win it and forgot about it.

Fucking Rogers group had my port royal road interchange project. It had only let like the last week. I want to say it was under a ten million dollar job but I still felt miffed.

I did get warned in an old mine one time to not share my spoils with the guy at the front desk because he gets cranky about it. Also that I might not want to keep cleaning them off by using spit+lick+wipe on pants in this area but we were getting into the zone with lots of sulfur and cadmium.

It's surprisingly easy to find a good geode, and then just crack it open with a hammer.

Most geodes are quartz, aka silicon aka the most common mineral around. They are typically formed when there's a void in the base because something dissolved. It doesn't even matter if you're looking in beckrock or not because quartz is typically harder than any other material. You can even find them in just random dirt outcroppings.

Depending on your area, you'll probably be looking for something about the size and texture of a walnut. So if you see a rock that has a weirdly bumpy texture while everything else around it is smooth there's a good chance it's a geode. If the surface isn't white it's probably just dirty or oxidized. Take it and scrap it around on some other rocks. Hopefully you're scratch away the dirty shell and see a hint of your treasure inside.

If you're willing to ruin a perfectly good screwdriver, you might want to do a few strong taps along the line of where you want it to break to weaken it. Even better if you have a actual cutting tool and you could do a first line that it will break along. BUT more likely you're wandering around in nature so you just need to find three rocks. One on the bottom, the one you are breaking, and the one to smack it with. That's right. Cave man it up. Oooga. Maybe look away as you do it so you don't get a chip flying into your eye.

Even if you didn't get a geode, take a moment to look at what you broke. Does it have neat layers? Does it have a cool structure? Does anything sparkle? Compare that to what it looked on the outside and dirtied up. You'll very quickly learn oh this looked like this inside and this on the outside, that one looks like that on the outside so it'll be this on the inside. Relive your childhood of "oh a cool rock" and have that much more joy as a result.

Even in the paper that made that claim (which is reference 1 on wikipedia), they call out the different between concrete and cement. It's a hilariously wide term to just call something "concrete" because the majority of concrete is just filler stone. Sometimes you'll get fancy with it and either add steel or fibres, but most of the time you're just dropping sand, local stones, and stone glue (cement). The running out of sand thing is like how we were running out of oil in the 80's before they figured out how to do deep sea rigs or fracking. In the same way there are other options available they just aren't as cheap(mechanically crushed to correct particle size) or effective(wrong particle shape). There frequently a push to use waste products, such as the ash from power creation, as a replacement for the sand and you can replace about half your sand with a less than 10% reduction in strength or lifespan. Obviously that's not what you want for some of your high strength builds (Dams, High-Rises, Bridges) but otherwise it's fine.

Cement is actually called Portland Cement, due to the original modern day cements history with the Isle of Portland in Dorset England. I have been to England only once and while there I made sure to go to the original quarry to get myself some specimens. The entire thing is Jurrassic Era sea fossils, and on my best one (about the size of a loaf of bread) I have a shark tooth fossil as well as some crystal formations in one of the shells. I got stopped by three forms of airline security to give it further investigations bringing it back home.
