Spoilers in OOC
Why are we banning people for this? It's a fucking movie. If you are seriously triggered by being told something about a movie then you may want to consider professional help to deal with this strange and unusual form of PTSD.
It also has no effect whatsoever on gameplay.

if we banned everyone who was a dick in OOC we'd have no server
the hilarious part is a lot of people offended by this are OK with people using, like, racial slurs in OOC even though those are objectively more dickish

It's the intent behind the words that are the issue. Frankly words like that are rarely going to ruin anyone's day.
Spoiling a film that people have been looking forward to for months?
Yeah, fuck off.

This thread is ridiculous and it's sad that an admin is the one making it. We have a don't be a dick rule. Spoiling a movie to people who are looking forward to it for months is being a dick.

Re: Spoilers in OOC
most of the people using racial slurs on tgstation probably don't see any harm in it and there's 100% no way the admin team could ever win a fight on convincing people not to use them, so it's not really fair to draw a parallel between something we have zero chance of changing and someone coming on just to deliberately be an asshole for no reason other than they can do itbandit wrote:if we banned everyone who was a dick in OOC we'd have no server

i really don't think you'll have many supporters on this - it's not what was said in OOC, it was why
there's a difference between someone casually using a racial slur in conversation because they think it's a funny/edgy word and someone directly provoking people by using racial slurs
there's a difference between, say, someone discussing a movie and accidentally spoiling it, and someone joining the server just to spoil the movie for others
your argument strikes me as fundamentally flawed

the difference is that anybody who is genuinely upset about learning about a plot point in a fictional movie is clearly either underage or has the maturity level of someone underage

Why are we banning people for this? It's a fucking game. If you are seriously triggered by being killed in a game about being on a metal death trap then you may want to consider professional help to deal with this strange and unusual form of PTSD.
It also has no effect whatsoever on your ability to play the game (you can just join a ghost role or switch servers).

If you can't understand why spoiling a film is a dick move then I worry who's the one that needs professional help due to the lack of empathy you clearly possess.

It's a traditional element of internet trolling, not just being a dick but acting self-righteous while you're doing it. Like those trolls that go "It's your fault for being offended, me bullying and harassing you it's just an inevitable force of nature, grow a thick skin"

Re: Spoilers in OOC
I imagine most people who like to ruin movies/books/good surprises are somewhere on the autistic spectrum, and thus, have some issues with empathy. I’m sure there’s exceptions, and this is just a generalisation. I did sit next to a mentally disabled guy when I went to see Star Wars though.
It’s not really a topic to get heated about.

No, we definitely want players to harden up a bit here, it's partially why we removed ban requests since we want players to be able to move on from everything but the more egregious griffing. Even pretending that someone spoiled something very dear to me, say the next installment of a certain novel series long awaited and long delayed, I'm not going to respond to with anything more than a kick at most. It's a big an issue as you want it to be and I'd like admins to treat it with as little (negative) attention as possible so they don't feed the griffer. A quick mute, a kick, bans if they just persist etc.
tldr don't let it bother you, admins should quietly curtail it when it happens but don't freak out about it as if it's major griff

Re: Spoilers in OOC
Have you tried not spoiling things for the sake of spoiling things?
Perhaps you should try. It's not hard. And it's best for everyone.
And it won't lead to dumb discussions like this where the only reasoning given for why they should be allowed to do the thing is "Grow a thicker skin!" or "Clearly they're immature or underage."
People who are asses use that line of reasoning. For everything.
Come up with a mature, sane, logical post regarding the issue capable of dissecting counterpoints while making valid points and maybe people won't think you're just being self-righteous.

Re: Spoilers in OOC
since my stance seems to be misinterpreted I'm not suggesting OOC be a total free for all. if this had happened when I was on I would probably just disable OOC the same way I'd disable it for people shitting it up with other things.
however, a server permaban, as happened here -- https://tgstation13.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14546 -- is completely ridiculous, especially for something that has zero effect on the game. even a ban is somewhat ridiculous for something that does not affect anybody's round in any way

Re: Spoilers in OOC
Remarkably bad thread
I don't see how going out of your way to upset people with spoilers will lead to anything interesting or exciting other than a cheap laugh at someones expense and unlike the bad things happening in a videogame I don't have a button that magically undoes it.
Penitent is never being released either bad example
I want them to harden up about bad things happening to them in a videogame about bad things happening to them to create an interesting story because the alternative is a dull and stifled experience run by admins.we definitely want players to harden up a bit here

Re: Spoilers in OOC
Okay but this didn't occur in game IC or in OOC, it was done through abusing automated PR announcements.
Plus plenty of people got banned for Fallout 4 spoilers in OOC way back when and it was generally agreed to be a shit thing to do and they deserved it, why is now different?

Actually let's go a step further and ban those who complain, after all they must clearly be underage if they are bothered by that, like bandit said.
I do agree that a fucking permaban is excessive, but notes may have been taken into account.

Re: Spoilers in OOC
as far as I'm concerned it isn't different, it'd be the same for star wars or fallout or there is a monster at the end of this book .
as far as abusing PR announcements, unless it's that guy who used PR titles to IC in OOC I don't see why the applicable ban there would be from the server rather than the github.

Bad behavior in one part of the community may or may not result in bans from other parts of the community this is also consistent with how this place has been run since 2010.

Re: Spoilers in OOC
I think that being a dick OOCly is even worse than being a dick ingame. OOC dicks tend to be more detrimental to the community than a guy who doesn't go through escalation policy correctly one or two times. Especially the types of people that join and pull stuff like this:
Banned from OOC - "OOC: Optimumtact: hey guyes the round type is rev, see you all tommorow"
(MANUAL BAN) Spamming OOC with PR open and closes and meming the second time after being told to fuck off and stop.
Banned from OOC - Was told not to spoil Fallout 4 or face an OOC ban, spoiled Fallout 4 and will face an OOC ban
Why should we allow people who clearly don't learn from their previous bans to play on the server?

Re: Spoilers in OOC
Posting spoilers in OOC is in and of itself a dick move but not one that demands a permaban.
Doing it consistently, over the course of a long period of time, and engaging in behavior in which they log in _explicitly to do this_, at least on the occasion in question, is indicative of a complete DIFFERENT dick move.
Which is to say: dropping some spoilers is a thing that happens on the internet that we SHOULD expect our players to be able to deal with when it happens from time to time.
But an individual who consistently goes out of their way to fuck with the playerbase on multiple fronts (e.g. OOC chat trolling, discord salt-sowing, and engaging with outside playerbases to 'attack' the standing or actual players of ours) isn't 'just dropping spoilers.'
I don't feel like this thread was opened in good faith and feels like an attempt to tear down what I felt was a pretty legitimate response to a long-term behavior pattern into 'lol ur banning him jes 4 spoilers,' and I'm extremely disappointed that it's been used as a 1:1 referendum on the behavior pattern as a whole in Policy Discussion.

It was because of his long term behavior. The straw that broke the camel's back was this, yes, but he has a history of this sort of thing. I've banned another player for something similar and it wasn't permanent because the player has no history of it.bandit wrote:I realize there is no proof on this beyond my own word but I still would have posted it if anyone else had been permabanned for spoilers in OOC (and I would have expressed this opinion in the thread had I seen it before it was locked.)
