Ethereal naming policy
Nervere heavily requested that I made this
what is the convention for these fuckers? I want to avoid shit names as seen with moths catgirls and lizards where its almost always a joke name.
Currently I'm doing something similar to Plasmaman, where I take a celestial body (Usually a star or constellation) and add 1 to 2 random letters as below:
https://i.gyazo.com/677de02db7f30d0782c ... 5c5092.mp4
I also heard some interest for eletricity related names but I personally prefer the celestial body naming convention due to it fitting their race name. However, I'm willing to change it if support weights more to the electricity side.
also ban losers that dont follow these or ruin the names by adding stupid shit like "Uranus XD". yay or double yay

I support having more thematic naming conventions for Ethereals.
In fact Id support having proper, non meme, naming guide lines for all the other races

Electricity/light related names makes more sense than star related ones; they aren't novakids or anything

Re: Ethereal naming policy
Light wavelengths would be a better naming scheme. I would also make more lore sense if you make the Ethereal language based on light instead of sound. The wavelength names would just be a human translation of the ethereal light language name.

Re: Ethereal naming policy
Basically it would be the color of the light and frequency as a number in Terahertz.Qustinnus wrote:can you turn that into an actual convention? as in, give me a list of prefix words and whatever should come behind it?
so the numbers would range from:
Ultraviolet 790 to ultraviolet 3000
Violet 668 to Violet 789
Blue 606 to Blue 668
Green 526 to Green 606
Yellow 508 to Yellow 526
Orange 484 to Orange 508
Red 400 to Red 484
Infrared 1 to Infrared 430
If you wanted to get real fancy you could do wavelength in nano-meters or the level of photon energy in electron volts as the number instead of just the frequency.
Anything outside of that range starts to get to microwaves and radiowaves.

Yeah that would get old pretty fast when there are 4 Blue random number greytiding around, compare with how many different plasmen names there are

Re: Ethereal naming policy
I guess you could technically go to the low frequency stuff, So that would add Microwave and Radio. But going higher than ultraviolet means that Ethereals can speak in Ionizing radiation, which while hilarious, would be kind of broken.Grazyn wrote:Yeah that would get old pretty fast when there are 4 Blue random number greytiding around, compare with how many different plasmen names there are
You can also just do regular colors as well, if you drop the frequency, so blue 668 could be called indigo.
An ethereal whos name is Red 400 Blue 620 could be called Magenta.

It's based on their color and each color has different rangers, that plus the way the colors are set is pretty difficult. Either way its not a great identifierDr_bee wrote:Not really, random color prefix, and a number, if its wavelength, photon energy, or frequency that is pretty much any number.Qustinnus wrote:that seems horridly difficult to code

Re: Ethereal naming policy
I still like my light idea. The name isnt based on the color of the Ethereal it is based on the light they give off as their name in their own language. The entire thing is based on the idea they use light instead of sound as a form of communication. Humans arent named paleskin darkhair, they are named off of sounds they make to identify themselves.

Re: Ethereal naming policy
We're just going to stick with how ethereal names are right now, with a celestial body (minus planets) as the first part of the name, and one or two random letters as the second part of the name.
We'll see how this works out. I'll keep this thread open so we can get some more thoughts on the topic with ethereals now testmerged on Bagil.
Examples of proper ethereal naming conventions at the present moment would be:
Andromeda PL
Themis TR
Sol MV
Gamma A
Kepler C
I realize there's some really wacky/long/etc. names of celestial bodies that exist.
Keep your ethereal names reasonable/realistic and there won't be any problems. You may be asked to change your name if it's something ridiculous or stupid.

So why exactly are these cool sci-fi aliens using Sol/Common names for stellar objects as part of their own cultural naming scheme, anyway?
I assume there must be a good reason why they're happy to use one kind of Earthly naming convention but using normal ones is out of the question, besides "someone thought it would be cool". Right?

Re: Ethereal naming policy
Well obviously they were more primitive before becoming a species on Nanotrasen stations. They were discovered when they began to explore the galaxy in the primitive starships from which they had viewed and been amazed by the uncountable celestial bodies everywhere. Upon being found by Nanotrasen they were integrated into the station and began to use NT culture, changing their names to new ones based on the names that had been given to the stars and planets they had been captivated by.MercuryArrow wrote:So why exactly are these cool sci-fi aliens using Sol/Common names for stellar objects as part of their own cultural naming scheme, anyway?
