Discord Rule 8 And What Is And Isn't Rule Breaking

Recently, mainly in the #art-general channel, there have been an influx of posts that, while not explicitly depicting sex, were likely created to be arousing. This brings into question rule 8:

8: Any NSFW content must be clearly labeled, as well as spoilered or nested in < > to prevent the automatic embed, pornographic content is not allowed

Does pornographic content, according to rule 8, include softcore porn? Or is it exclusive to hardcore porn? Either way, I think that the rule should be rewritten to be more clear on what is and isn't considered pornographic.

I'll be real with you I don't think there's going to be any useful rules lawyer definition of what "pornographic" content means which isn't "the discord moderator will know it when they see it"

It's always going to be slightly vibes-based, but the way I've always seen it enforced is, "If your boss saw the image in question, would there be an uncomfortable discussion about your browsing habits at work?". This is never actually going to be a solid way of handling it from an academic perspective, but I would lean further towards safe than anything - if a character looks like they're intentionally drawn for the sake of arousal (lots of cleavage, huge tits, questionable pose) or if they're wearing intentionally skimpy clothing, it probably needs a spoiler tag.

Mind, I am far from a puritan and I don't much personally care if I see a bit too much tiddy from time to time, but again, the point is that we aren't causing people to have issues if they're viewing Discord at work.

That rule will be interpreted in whatever way keeps Discord off our asses and our level of creeps and weirdos manageable.

I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it.

Because the conversations usually go a little like this:

- Someone posts something questionable in the art channel.
- A Discord Jannie nukes it because, to them, it looks a little too explicit to be in that channel.
- The person who posts it gets upset and asks why we deleted it.
- Jannie explains the purpose of the rule.
- Person is still upset, calls the Jannie some variant of a prude or puritan.

The intent behind this thread seems to be to move Discord Rule 8 issues away from being vibes-based and more evidence-based (us making it more explicit what can and can't be posted), but I'm not personally convinced we can do that without some major issues.

the problem is that "Safe for work" has become the go-to terminology for ages and it ceases to be a useful term when you're dealing with NEETs, especially when you combine that with the internet contrarian "muh free speech you have to justify all removals or I'm constitutionally entitled to say anything I want" attitude that's a common symptom of Chan Brain

and you end up with people coming out with insane takes like "as long as it doesn't show a girl's nipple it's sfw" that lead to the question of "where the fuck do you work that that's considered safe" and sooner or later you end up with this

I think this has an incredibly simple solution. Anything outright NSFW (porn) is already banned. Anything risqué but not rulebreaking simply gets spoilered. You cant really complain about “muh workplace” when you’re clicking a spoilered image.

Right, my answer is still, "If it would get you in trouble at work, you should be spoilering it". If we need to word it differently for those who aren't employed, we can say, "If the average person would feel uncomfortable looking at it in public, you should spoiler it".

I don’t think anyone this thread has said they were upset when they have to spoiler NSFW content. If anything it’s the opposite, I think OP is looking for a harsher rule, but just my impression.

That's the first part of the rule which states NSFW is allowed as long as it is spoilered and labeled. This is easy enough to understand by the example you gave.
However, I think they were asking for clarification on the second part of the rule that states pornographic content is not allowed at all.

I would say that anything that depicts explicit sexual activity or nudity for the purpose of arousal would count as pornographic content.

We think the rule is fine as it is.
If you think some image would make people in the public/at work uncomfortable then just spoiler it.
If it's not something like renaissance art don't post penis/balls/vagina/asshole/female nipples.
I think the current rule encapsulates that if you use common sense.
Looking in the art channel I only saw suggestive art of felinids wearing bras, that is not really even softcore, I don't see the problem.
