Bring back the old SMES behavior.

Post by Kyrah Abattoir » #278320

A while ago SMES cells behaved like so:

When the SMES power os fully drained, the output switches to OFF.

Currently, the output will remain set to on no matter what, this makes solars a lot less interesting, back then, if you didn't let the SMES "charge up" for a bit, the power drop that solars experience when they don't have a line of sight with the sun could drain them completely and switch the output to OFF, which, if unchecked could trigger a cascading power failure in the station. (One solar array losing power means all the others had to give more power which could end up tripping them too and/or lead to APCs failing to charge properly).

I believe this behavior should be brought back because it made setting up reasonable SMES input/outputs more dependent on the type of power supply (strength, peak power, possible fluctuations).

You mean people don't just wire the solars straight to the grid?

How does that has to do anything with my suggestion? The solar array case was just an example.

Someone on Sybil has been not only using the SMES, but somehow managing to wire the SMES to itself so it uses its own output to charge.

Whoever it is leaves the charge and the output at 50k while wired to itself so the net output is exactly 0
