I suggested this long time ago and nothing happened, so don't get your hopes up for being the Spacewolf Blitzer.

But it shouldn't be separate job anyway.

It shouldn't be separated because Librarian and Curator are meme professions already. And nobody does reporting because nobody reads newscasters. To make them read newscasters you need to make better news, and to make better news you need better tools.

Curators are even supposed to have remote newscaster access in their pda for exactly this purpose except it's been broken for like a year

A new job entails:
1. Mapping a new department/office in every map
2. Giving them specialized tools that aren't available to everyone else
3. Having a reason to exist other than being an assistant with a gimmick

Which is much more work than your idea of "give an assistant a camera" which can, in fact, be accomplished by just picking up a camera as assistant

The only real difference I can see with having a Journalist role is a level of legitimacy. The idea that they are paid by the corporation to report on news or produce propaganda. Newcasters are easy to use and cameras can be printed from autolathes now so they aren't even a rare resource. The Curator has a nice PDA cartridge that allows them to post Newcaster articles from their PDAs but lacks the ability to attach photos so I never used it. Blogger gimmick really is easiest to do from the position of a bored Assistant. Even if we did get a journalist role I would probably end up ignoring it and keep rolling assistant so I can just drop the gimmick when I get bored and keep my maint access.

1. If it's so easy then why are people trying to get rid of the maps because coders are like 'wtf there's no room for our cool features'
2. How do you make a better camera? Give it the forensic scanner as well or some shit? No film requirement? Digital storage?

Just ask the HoP to change your assistant ID to 'Journalist' custom title. Most will do it. Just don't ask for something stupid like all access.

Frank West is and always was a journalist. Having to endure a period of not being a journalist is bad game design.

I probably should've wrote that without putting a capital letter at beginning to show I was joking, but I don't really care if this gets added or not. I don't know how it'll be fun for multiple people to play as, though. Journalist gimmicks aren't really too common and only a few do it.

Sure, but in the end that is nothing but a gimmick you do for one round. Its different if Journalist was an actual job, with an office and tools to better record and deliver news(hopefully in the most obnoxious, annoying way possible).

Right now news isnt so important because in the end you are relying on a small number of players to actually pull off a good gimmick. you never expect good news, so you never really check for it. If it was an actual job, maybe there would be more interest and more people checking the newscaster. Although i do think the newscaster needs a little love. Maybe some new sounds for breaking news stories? short videos would be kewl, but i doubt its possible to code that(i dont know).

Barely legal wire taps that let them listen in on conversations or even take photos. A printing press in their office along with some options for delivery. Like a newspaper-firing bot or cannon.

People don't report on things because they don't think people will read it. The only time I've ever read the news is when someone threw a newspaper at me and told me I was in it.

I think that making the news more important in the metagame would be nice, since then there would be a reason to read it. I think that a reporter would really help inform the crew on the current happenings too. Sometimes I go the whole round not knowing what antag is on the station because I am working on other things, maybe the reporter could fix this issue (although I think it's my fault for not getting involved).

I think maybe instead of having the newscaster say "A new report is available!" or whatever it is, say the title of the article that was just published. This would encourage the sort of actual reporter habits that we see nowadays. We'd see clickbaits, trolls, misleading articles, as well as actual decent reporting. So instead of "A new report is available" make it, "New report by Giggles the Clown: Captain is confirmed comdom." I think a small adjustment like that would make a big difference. Restrict it to 32 characters or something small. Make sure that the person reporting it is listed, so you know when you see the clown's name not to take it seriously.

Its not like a journalist needs an office that they'll never, ever use. Make them spawn in the library writing/gaming area with a bigger-range camera in their bag, done

I actually had the same idea, however I realized that announcing over radio would cause additional spam among the noise on general radio chat. Having any form of a general announcement would not be viable either, as spamming would be too easily accessible to anyone. Of course just saying over radio "READ MY NEWS ARTICLE" would be probably equally as effective instead and have a similar result.
