Re: Crew Reporter/journalist job
A new job entails:
1. Mapping a new department/office in every map
2. Giving them specialized tools that aren't available to everyone else
3. Having a reason to exist other than being an assistant with a gimmick
Which is much more work than your idea of "give an assistant a camera" which can, in fact, be accomplished by just picking up a camera as assistant

Re: Crew Reporter/journalist job
The only real difference I can see with having a Journalist role is a level of legitimacy. The idea that they are paid by the corporation to report on news or produce propaganda. Newcasters are easy to use and cameras can be printed from autolathes now so they aren't even a rare resource. The Curator has a nice PDA cartridge that allows them to post Newcaster articles from their PDAs but lacks the ability to attach photos so I never used it. Blogger gimmick really is easiest to do from the position of a bored Assistant. Even if we did get a journalist role I would probably end up ignoring it and keep rolling assistant so I can just drop the gimmick when I get bored and keep my maint access.

Just ask the HoP to change your assistant ID to 'Journalist' custom title. Most will do it. Just don't ask for something stupid like all access.Ayy Lemoh wrote:3. There is no reason for this to exist except to play as frANK WEST

Frank West is and always was a journalist. I probably should've wrote that without putting a capital letter at beginning to show I was joking, but I don't really care if this gets added or not. I don't know how it'll be fun for multiple people to play as, though. Journalist gimmicks aren't really too common and only a few do it.

Re: Crew Reporter/journalist job
Sure, but in the end that is nothing but a gimmick you do for one round. Its different if Journalist was an actual job, with an office and tools to better record and deliver news(hopefully in the most obnoxious, annoying way possible).Gigapuddi420 wrote:Just ask the HoP to change your assistant ID to 'Journalist' custom title. Right now news isnt so important because in the end you are relying on a small number of players to actually pull off a good gimmick. you never expect good news, so you never really check for it. If it was an actual job, maybe there would be more interest and more people checking the newscaster. Although i do think the newscaster needs a little love. Maybe some new sounds for breaking news stories? short videos would be kewl, but i doubt its possible to code that(i dont know).

Barely legal wire taps that let them listen in on conversations or even take photos. A printing press in their office along with some options for delivery. Like a newspaper-firing bot or cannon.Lumbermancer wrote:Journalists needs pirate dj station style surveillance.

Re: Crew Reporter/journalist job
People don't report on things because they don't think people will read it. The only time I've ever read the news is when someone threw a newspaper at me and told me I was in it.
I think that making the news more important in the metagame would be nice, since then there would be a reason to read it. I think that a reporter would really help inform the crew on the current happenings too. Sometimes I go the whole round not knowing what antag is on the station because I am working on other things, maybe the reporter could fix this issue (although I think it's my fault for not getting involved).
I think maybe instead of having the newscaster say "A new report is available!" or whatever it is, say the title of the article that was just published. This would encourage the sort of actual reporter habits that we see nowadays. We'd see clickbaits, trolls, misleading articles, as well as actual decent reporting. So instead of "A new report is available" make it, "New report by Giggles the Clown: Captain is confirmed comdom." I think a small adjustment like that would make a big difference. Restrict it to 32 characters or something small. Make sure that the person reporting it is listed, so you know when you see the clown's name not to take it seriously.

Its not like a journalist needs an office that they'll never, ever use. Make them spawn in the library writing/gaming area with a bigger-range camera in their bag, done

Re: Crew Reporter/journalist job
I actually had the same idea, however I realized that announcing over radio would cause additional spam among the noise on general radio chat. Having any form of a general announcement would not be viable either, as spamming would be too easily accessible to anyone. Of course just saying over radio "READ MY NEWS ARTICLE" would be probably equally as effective instead and have a similar result.somerandomguy wrote:Also have the one it was written from announce it over the radio so people that aren't within earshot of a newscaster know there's something new.
