Plasteel bridges across lava & chasms & bridge fun

Post by FantasticFwoosh » #166615

Ok we all know that after a while, lava will irrevocably destroy everything as is evidenced by total fireproofing in a fireproof mech doing nothing, whilst chasm just admin-delete whatever falls into it.

Now. Rather than just floor over them (that'd be boring without huge material investment) what if we did build over them in sort of straight lines with reinforced bridge pieces. My idea is this, with a certain amount of plasteel, you can create segmental (similar to the travel pipe/atmos pipe system) parts starting from one point from the craft menu with plasteel. Of course if you want to expand your dinky 1x4 bridge from one side of a lake to another, you could try welding the material between two points and then applying additional plasteel to join them together.

> Lets say that something in the region of two plasteel sheets makes 1 bridge piece, this piece can be clicked on/altered multiple time by hand/with a wrench to change shape to something desirable.

> Bridges/walkways block entry on floor level without climbing onto them, otherwise they require stairs, which can be made with 4 plasteel and provide a method of safe escort against borgs but not from shitters/monsters reaching out and trying to touch you.

> Combat wise, human players with grip can grab you off a bridge at floor level and slam you into the floor below to much the same effect.

Adding more than one component to a bridge such as a metal rod scaffolding, a air supply (either from a canister or wherever) and a glass/reinforced glass dome can make a artificial environment, like one of those scuba tunnels or dare i say a bio-dome, with the concept that it will stabilize the environment briefly and is meant to be encouraged as a ash-proofed destructible walkway.

> Applying a airlock electronic to the sealed up domed bridge will put a door at the point of entry you're facing at, meaning that if its left open, you could walk 1 tile into a bridge for a brief respite from the ash, place a door electronic immediately infront of you, then enter a superfast/near nonexistant non gas releasing airlock to a 'relatively' safe and stable enviroment. Such a example would be to make a walkway between two ash shelters as to expand the area around them and the entry points.

One of the ways to beat the suggested invincible lavaland boss (if you keep up with the PR discussions and pulls) would be to lure it across a chasm bridge and drop it, super mario bro's style. Just a suggestion of its additional applied uses.

Of course with bridges, it brings in a lot of fun ideas

> Invisible leap of faith silentium meme bridges
> Ayy alloy/weak wire glass light bridges
> Really weak and non fireproof wood bridges
> Retracting bridges and being atom stomped (with admin notices) by bridges made of heavy material
> The ability to build off station but still integral station areas without simply cutting into existing space.

This is just really a jumbled compilation of ideas, but thanks for reading.

Having levels and stuff sounds like it would get messy, but I can see bailey bridge style things working.

You build each segment, then you click on a tile while facing a direction, each time you click the tile it extends the bridge one tile across. Using rods on a segment before you place it would give it a barrier on the sides to stop you falling off.

In my mind it would simply be adding onto the basis of the 'level' of tables when applied on flooring, just slightly elevated half room size, require climbing to get up and down from unless placed below yourself (in a chasm/space/lava) for instance. Such applications include secure walkway's, a two wide walkway on the far side of a four wide hallway is going to protect the people walking on the either side from people touching them without explicitly climbing towards them.

You could have a safe elevated and solid plasteel walkway around the singularity, and it wouldn't buckle (though it would get eaten) or around a supermatter shard for safety and aesthetics inside as a barrier to stop people bum rushing the containment.

Lifeweb has a system of simulating multi z-levels easily, so its not beyond the realm of possibility. In addtiion the original design document for Lavaland did explictly state that there would be a surface and a underground levels, the underground being where most of mining takes place whereas the surface is where escape pods and the proposed respawn species would be (essentially a bunch of crashed aliens/humans that need to repair shit and is meant for people who've died).
