As I slowly chug along fixing and buffing and redoing PAIS and making my own version of guncrafting, I'd like to port the PTL from Goonstation public release as a side project
Basically
Laser.
Insert power.
LAser fires off z level
It incinerates anything blocking it
Station benefits from selling power
thoughts?

Make it an alternate engine. Build a generator on lavaland and use the laser to transmit power to the station. The engine section of engineering gets a receiver dish that has to be focused/aligned properly in order to work. Otherwise, the laser misses and sets vast swaths of the station on fire.

this is a good idea. also gives engineers a non-murder reason to be on lavaland.

Would prefer to make power scarce rather than double up on what purpose it serves. Would also need to change power generation to be based on a resource or skill or decision or something rather than being a chore.

even if it's primary purpose is to sell the power for mad spacecash, please at least make it possible to build on-station receiver stations, so you can beam power to other, closer objects such as space autism forts, the derelict or KSS13 or whatever.

also it definitely needs a nuke this site from orbit[X] lavaland function, albeit probably with some restrictions such as RoF, coordinate targeting, aiming requirements etc.

also make sure you make the amount of receiver-transmitter bounces more than 1, so you could build a receiver station on lavaland, a transmitter there and then cut SS13 in half from lavaland with a giant superlaser.

It's actually a fair point because power right now is free and infinite. So basically this laser just means extra points for cargo that they can reasonably expect every round.

Now you're making a fair point that extra points for cargo won't kill anyone, which I'm inclined to agree with. It's just that if we want to give cargo more points, we should just give them more points directly instead of creating a complicated system that doesn't actually make power generation or interaction any different than it is now that happens to give cargo more points as a side effect.

It gives engineering something to set up and do instead of wait for bombs to happen or try to be creative for the nth time finding a project to do themselves. Cargo getting points is really a side-effect, and a subjective one at that.

Fixing engines so they require actual maintenance,
ee fuel and weren't self sustaining perpetual energy machines might actually make something like this idea worthwhile and give engineering an honest reason to exsist outside of flipping the breaker box on.
