So... California is on fire...
And right here, is the fire near me... with the dignified name of...
Butte fire... It's actually pronounced "Byoot"... but... Butt fire is a lot more funny.

Re: So... California is on fire...
If stories from Australian fires have taught me anything just evacuate if it will get close you can't save your home from it if it is a proper inferno. Shit catches trees on fire across roads and trees can get so hot they explode it is crazy.

I'm pretty safe.
There's nothing around here that can catch on fire.

Re: So... California is on fire...
Actually looking it up exploding trees in fires is more of an Australian thing because apparently the eucalyptus oil is flammable enough to make a living tree explode. Which probably means they like exploding like exploding is part of the survival strategy.
Plants are fucking crazy some strive to be as flammable as possible because they are so fire adapted smoke is required to stir their seeds out of dormancy.
Oh also recent studies of prehistoric ecosystems has revealed not many large animals (dinosaurs) lived in some environments near the equator because it just caught on fire too drat much so look forward to more fires.

Yah. I went to Aus a couple of years ago and stuff like that was all over the place, burnt husks with new growth sprouting out of them.

Pretty much 100% sure that isn't an exploded tree. That's a cycad an and those burnt black strips are where it's tons for spiked leaves use to be.
The fuzz on the new growth gives it away.
Pretty tough though like a lot of plants that are fire adapted.

Taken from my house.
Those aren't clouds. The white balance on my phone is a little too good, everything in that picture is suppose to be an orangey yellow tint.
Although there is an update, it's at 20% containment and has not increased beyond 65,000 acres. Also the Evacuation Advisory has been lifted from my town, however we are told we are not in the clear yet.

THE BLOOD MOON LINGERS
But yeah I live in Virginia and am happy to say that my state doesn't regularly burst into flames. We only occasionally have to deal with a hurricane. Also we have water.

I think it's more of a Southern CA thing, not sure about dem North-folk. In my area you got to ration the water. Which means you can't water the lawn more than twice the week. I do my part by not showering more than once a month!

California: The Australia of the United States.
Seriously who thought that California was a good idea. The place has fires, earthquakes, hurricanes(?), Hollywood, deserts, and no sustainable source of water.

Ahaha earthquakes Australia has very few of those. We sit in the middle of our own private tectonic plate leaving magma farts as the only as the only thing to even give us a rumble.

Big earthquakes are few and far between, and everything built after ~1980 was built to withstand them. Fires are what wreck shit here.ShadowDimentio wrote:California: The Australia of the United States.

Obligatory rant: Big agriculture uses 80% of our water supply, and pays next to fucking nothing for it. Most water-intensive cash crops sold out of state like almonds, not food used to feed the masses. I'll let you guess who's one of the biggest lobbying spender/campaign contributors in the state.Takeguru wrote:What water shortage?

Hurricanes are extremely rare, like, really really rare, this part of the pacific just doesn't have the right conditions for them. Also yeah.. the drought wouldn't be nearly as bad if there was better handling of our water resources.Luke Cox wrote:Big earthquakes are few and far between, and everything built after ~1980 was built to withstand them. Re: So... California is on fire...
The state called a flex alert a few days ago. So we're also running out of power, which is nice.

Re: So... California is on fire...
The Butte fire has reached 45% containment and many areas that were set to mandatory evacuations are now under advisory, also my advisory evacuation has been lifted. However, we have not been given the all clear.
