Name Policy
I'm seeing several instances where people are ignoring name policy. In fact, I've been seeing them for a few months now. Admins blank me completely when AO instincts kick in and I nudge them in the ribs about it - many names I don't recognise, which leads me to think that these newmins just aren't told about it.
For the uninitiated, name policy essentially means "have, at least, vaguely sensible names". I've been warned before for having Dr. as an honourific, for example; mononyms aren't cool, and neither are excessively grim firstname-lastnames. We don't have Puke Chunks anymore, we don't have Poopfeast Fourtwenty, we don't have A BIG FUCKING BABY (sorry, Crag)... names like that break EMMULSIONS.
So how are we seeing things like Howdy and Butte slip past the net - consistently, in regards to the former?

Re: Name Policy
I was told its less of an issue, so I haven't been enforcing it either unless its something exceedingly retarded or in allcaps. Everybody else seems to have forgotten or stopped caring as well.
Shame because there are a lot of just plain awful names lately.

I just dont see the point in enforcing name policy when lizards get a free pass at it.
When we have a creature that looks like barney running around in a fur suit named something like cucks-the-memes, why even bother?

Re: Name Policy
Lizard policy is awkward and not truly defined, as the Argonian Shoop-The-Whoop came about of its own accord and nothing's really been set in stone.

Re: Name Policy
Name policy used to be very arbitrary. Honorifics weren't allowed and neither were mononyms, even if they were sensible. Some people in the course of history yelled about name policy without being smart enough to accurately articulate what they actually wanted. I had a guess at some point and proposed a rule that names had to roughly conform to twenty first century mainstream naming conventions, along with the arbitrary rules mentioned earlier.
That however got streamlined due to the low rules craze and it soon became apparent that admins were either nazis with their own headcanon to be enforced or admins who didn't really care. What we have now is a rule where names simply have to fit in the context of a silly space station, which all things so far have not pointed to the contrary of, with the caveat that admins can step in for really silly names. It's an intuitive rule which most closely follows how admins enforce it, which was also another issue back then.
For reference, heres the current precedent regarding names
- Excessively OOC names fall under rule 4. Make a minimum effort to have your name fit in a setting involving a wacky space station in the future. Admins may get involved if your name is dumb.

I don't see why names matter when there's barely any RP here. This is bitching for the sake of bitching.

Re: Name Policy
RP died early this year, the name policy along with it ;_;
Seriously I used to occational spawn myself as spacefox, go to the bar and have a drink. I'd get a bunch of "What the heck!?" and lots of other enquires, I'd sit at the bar and talk to whoever came in or the bartender and come up with some backstory.
I did this recently. No one said anything in the corridors. Got to the bar. Scientist pours drink over me and sets me alight, a medical doctor steals my drink. Bartender wordlessly pours another. The only conversation I heard was "Bartender give me a bottle of alcohol". FUN.

Well, we could actually do something about it if we're all so fed up by it. Or at least the ones that seem to say they are on here.
Actually gonna make a thread about it to avoid going hugely off topic.

Well, the name policy should be more strongly enforced again, but hell, lizardmen should also be forced to follow a naming policy, since frequently there are just retarded names. Here is a less retarded one. Is-A-Lizard

No point in doing it until this place gets closer to being medium RP. Forcing names isn't a good first step. It just pisses people off and is the least immersion breaking thing going on.

I'm not going to enforce my headcanon on you. Mononyms may well be realistic given 500 years of human history, crew members may well have adopted the tradition from clowns or mimes, who knows. Maybe Nanotrasen in fact sends crew members with mononyms who aren't clowns or mimes into meatspike camps so it's actually not canon or allowed. Maybe you were Jane Smith once but your husband pissed you off so much and you're suffering from memory loss and forgot your maiden name so you just dropped your ex-husbands last name and went by Jane.
Yes they're allowed. Just don't be stupid with the liberty you have and admins won't smack you around and change your name for you.

Re: Name Policy
This is one of those nebulous kinda subjects that's really hard to actually define through clauses and subclauses and etc etc etc an actual rigid defined thing of what is and isn't okay, and any policy like mononames will have as many perfectly sensible exceptions as there are stupid names that should obviously blocked.
Sadly this makes it one of those things that rules lawyers like to seize upon. In most cases it's fairly obvious when someone's naming themselves after a fuckin' meme or something that's otherwise taking the piss, but good fuckin' luck actually nailing them down on it without them screaming up a fit in adminhelps because you don't consider huffs-the-dongs a realistic name.

Re: Name Policy
Names should follow the following process.
- 1: Is it a totally normal name (Eg John Harpers)? Proceed to 5 if yes.
2: Is it a name belonging to a clown/mime? Proceed to 5 if yes.
3: Is it original/funny? Proceed to 5 if yes.
4: Is it stupid and you're willing to be valid for having it? Proceed to 5 if yes.
5: Approved. Carry on, citizen.

Isn't that the [oh god really] 'benefit' of playing as a derpy lizard apart from the unspoken Lizardtide help and the wagging tail?
Lizards are second class citizens, why wouldn't you expect them to have 'sillier' names that you, a MASTER RACE HOOMAN, can poke fun at?
I don't really understand the argument of 'Humans shouldn't have naming policy cause Lizard names are memey' when the most logical response to that is 'if you want to have a dumb name like a lizard, go lizard'. Have your cake, but you have to eat all of it.
I am personally triggered at the recent memey names. At least RANDY SAVAGE and BORK LESNAR would make that apart of their gimmick.
