add an ellipsis bubble for when people are typing
TRIGGER WARNING: POST CONTAINS REFERENCES TO BAYSTATION AND RP
i just think this would be a neat feature overall, i like how bay has the thing where it says "x is speaking into a microphone" and think the ellipsis bubble would be a nice addition to promote rp in that people might not shoot first if they see someone attempting to communicate in some situations. what do you guys think of adding these two features?

Re: add an ellipsis bubble for when people are typing
It'd hopefully facilitate RP, but I can see people powergaming with it - only attacking people while they're typing (because it's harder for them to retaliate). Maybe if it was toggleable for each person; "Do I want people to see if I'm talking?".

Re: add an ellipsis bubble for when people are typing
yeah, if you can powergame enough to only attack when they're typing then you can already tell when people are typing. this would be a nice QoL change.

Yes please. I already know if someone's typing in a combat situation.

Re: add an ellipsis bubble for when people are typing
Looking at how bay does it, it's as I imagined, they just check that the chat bar has "Say: ..." or "*Me ..." (where ... indicates extra letters, so it doesn't trigger just for having the Say: in your box) in it and then add remove the indicator based on a client preference.
Edit: Apparently they disabled that proc, checking it every life() tick IS wasteful after all, instead they set it/unset it when people use the say verb
Still simple stuff though.

It's perfect for ERP, but awful for just about everything else.

I'm pretty sure the way it's done on bay doesn't always work. Though may be that changed.

You can already argue that that's a problem. Greyshit McCuntsicle runs up to Officer Shit-For-Brains and all him a simple question. If Officer SFB doesn't move for a second or two Greyshirt whips out his throbbing stun prod and nails the dude.Takeguru wrote:An "ATTACK ME NOW" indicator

Yeah, but this would just make it all the more clear.Jacough wrote:You can already argue that that's a problem. Greyshit McCuntsicle runs up to Officer Shit-For-Brains and all him a simple question. How is making the game more clear about what's going on somehow a bad thing?Takeguru wrote:Yeah, but this would just make it all the more clear.Jacough wrote:You can already argue that that's a problem. The perceived negatives this would bring are negligible.
I fully support this.

Re: add an ellipsis bubble for when people are typing
The perceived negatives can be negated by having a "toggle bubble on/off" verb in one of the tabs. If you don't want to get jumped while you're talking, turn it off so people don't know if you're talking or not.

Re: add an ellipsis bubble for when people are typing
Or people can just accept it as part of the game and live with it and adapt their meta game to include this, much like they accept that they don't have an option in the colour of shoes they spawn with.
Speech bubbles' impact on the people who play the game to win will be minimal, so making it an option will only have the effect of destroys its consistency, which I think is far far more important. Plus, options can be added for literally anything, but if you adopt that development strategy, you'll be left with a complete and utter mess, so it's better to only allow player choice for meaningful things and not for absolutely everything. And yes, I know this is fairly innocuous, but I prefer to just take a "do not start with innocuous meaningless options" stance, since options are a very slippery slope and tend to lead to end in something like the TGS config file, which has a lot of options, none of which have any meaning.

Re: add an ellipsis bubble for when people are typing
You know when one person you are focusing on is typing, now you would be able to tell if multiple people are doing so at the same time with pin point accuracy 100% of the time. Not to mention this speech bubble garbage extinguished fun impersonation play already.
