Heart attack subsided false alarm. While googling for more info on a release date I saw a bunch of places offering pre-orders without saying they were pre-orders. Game's release date according to FUCKING GAMESTOP is 7/31. That's almost three more months fuck why.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
It's been out in Japan since November, but this is speedy localization compared to how long it usually takes. Might be worth the wait, though--the Western versions seem to be deluxe versions by default, e.g. our launch version of 4 had extra content compared to their launch version of it. Dunno if that new stuff was released as DLC for them or what.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
I can't decide what weapon I want to use. I've never used the bug staff or charge blade before so I should try those.
But with all the new arts and stuff it's like everything is new again. Shit.
That gunlance ability where you fire the shell backwards to launch yourself forward for a slam looks so fun.
But then the LBG art that rocket you upwards for aerial shots looks fun too.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
I'll probably stick with my normal style of absolutely no finesse and go with a greatsword or hammer. I am not a subtle person.
Never used the insect glaive much myself, but the charge blade is nicely versatile. There's also a surprising amount of depth to it and it can really drop the hurt with its big vial discharge attacks.

Humble Bundle has an E3 pack up right now that includes a key to access a demo for Monster Hunter Generations.
I really want that, but at the same time paying money to play a fucking demo is absolute insanity and these people should throw themselves in a lake for doing this.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Caved, bought in for the demo.
Jumped right in with the charge blade so I could see some of what is new.
This is the least fun I've ever had playing Monster Hunter.
I think some of it is me changing and some of it is the game refusing to grow up.
I found myself getting incredibly pissed off that there's still no actual lock-on. There's a quickturn you can hammer to keep moving the camera towards a monster you've selected, but there's a bit of latency between the input and the camera actually moving so that you're always hammering the button but it's moving in weird spurts.
...and I remember playing Monster Hunter on PSP and clawing it and thinking that this was fine, and that people who couldn't handle it were whiners and just weren't "getting it" as part of Monster Hunter's charm.
...but now it's just shit. It's just shit. After a whole franchise of Souls games and some other great character-action games have come and gone I can't excuse this game's shitty controls anymore. It makes the game harder to play for no purpose. It could easily be fixed and they still haven't done it.
The N3DSXL's screen is still not wide enough. Getting close enough to start hammering on one of these giant fucking monsters means losing sight of everything else around you. Leaving 3D on while trying to play is kind-of a fucking nightmare, even with the N3DS' improved head tracking and such. One minute you're looking at a monster and everything is great and the 3D is working. The next second it's like you've crossed your eyes and everything is stuttering and flickering.
I'm going to buy it anyway because I've been out of the game for too long but based on the demo alone it's shit.
I've always described MonHun as a really shitty game that I love, a deeply flawed game that is a ton of fun and has a lot of great moments once you get into its rhythm.
Now that it's been some time since I've played one and I've fallen out of the rhythm it's just a really shitty game that frustrates me for no reason. All I can see are ways this could be not such a pain in the ass to play, and it just reminds me that they continue to make it this way despite how obvious some of these creature comforts are.

The game recognizes that I'm using an N3DSXL with the second analog nub and it wants me to use that for camera controls by default (which sucks, actually). I need to give it another go and see if I can fix this somehow.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Played it some more.
Being the Palico is cool. It's a neat new gameplay thing. I like it.
There's no lock-on in this game. There IS a feature where you can pick a monster that the camera will snap to when you press L, but that's not new. I was hoping they finally got over themselves and implemented a real lock-on but no they're still clinging to concepts that can only be described as "artifical difficulty". Struggling to keep the camera centered on the thing you are trying to fight is not good design.
The community for MonHun is as degenerate as its ever been. When googling to see if they've finally changed that I happened across a lot of conversations where people were telling eachother to "go back" to various other games for not being hardcore enough to enjoy struggling with a shitty camera system.
I've been in on the franchise since MH2 on PSP and the system has always sucked. Seeing people claim they enjoy the system the way it is and that others are somehow wrong for pointing out its shitty is like the videogame equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome.

Do they have any of the new combat styles in the demo? I mean, I'll probably stick to the classic style because I'm a fuckin' simp who can't handle anything more complicated than a greatsword or hammer, but I'm still interested at least.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
I've used it before. I want to say it existed pre MH3U but I can't remember. Having a lock on is better than not having one, but it's still a pain in the ass to use compared to every other game in this genre having caught wise and just letting you ACTUALLY lock on.
Every DMC, Bayonetta, MGR, etc. have lock on.
God Eater, Freedom Wars, Toukiden, etc. have lock on.
MonHun is still living in the early PS2 days when it comes to that.
That you can eventually learn to play around the shit camera controls doesn't change the fact that they're shitty controls. When there's a really obvious solution to the problem right there, why does Capcom settle for "bad" game after game after game?
Calling this a lock on isn't really right. It doesn't lock the camera to a target. It lets you pick a monster, and then every time you push a button the camera snaps to the target...and the instant it moves or you move it's no longer pointing in the right direction...which is every second.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Like holy shit, here's a screenshot from the game itself. Look at this and try to figure out just what the fuck is going on.
The GBA tier resolution isn't helping the game one bit, but then the forced perspective makes the player character blot out a fucking ton of the screen. There's a monster under there somewhere, and you're supposed to be able to engage it in melee.
Now look at this and remember that you're going to be struggling to even keep your eyes on that dude as it pounces all over the place and the best you can do is just keep hammering the L button.
The PSP was at least 480 x 272, 16:9 proper widescreen. You couldn't lock-on but you could see more of what was around you, and that helped a lot.
The Vita is 960 x 544 16:9 widescreen and it's an ongoing crime against humanity that Capcom keeps releasing MonHun on handhelds that aren't the Vita, but that's as much Sony's fault for being fucking assholes over MHP3.
Stack these two up and tell me you don't prefer the bottom screen.

It's really not, though. Having a lockon is neat but the 3DS resolution is only 400 x 240 resolution. It's 5:3. It's disgusting.its a hella lot better than the PSP days.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
I'm complaining about the games' poor camera controls. The resolution and viewable area of the game are a major factor.
tl;dr the play control for the camera hasn't been such a major issue in the past because the game has always looked better than it has up until now. The 3DS versions of the game have the smallest screen, must scrunched UI, and lowest resolution of any game in the franchise. Coming back to the franchise after skipping MH4U (but putting hundreds of hours into MH3U) makes it really obvious just how big a problem this is.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Yet a massive step forwards in terms of gameplay. Did anyone ever play a MH game because its pretty? I dont think so. It looked like shit on the PSP, it still looks like shit on the 3DS. The camera controls are fine, you are just not used to them. I shat on MH4U before it came out, but now, having played so much of it, i can honestly say i was wrong and thats its a fantastic game. I still stand by what i said, that MH3U looked better and had superior level design, but MH4U is well worth the money if you are a MH fan.
Really though, if you want a beautiful MH game, go play MHO. If you can stand the Chinese language, then you will probably love it. https://youtu.be/p70WAIDNPB4 It looks great.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Then why is it difficult for you to admit that the 3DS version is a graphical downgrade?
You can prefer the style of it, but you don't have to exclusively care about graphics and nothing else to point out that this is the lowest resolution and frame rate the franchise has ever appeared at. Yet when I point that out you keep trying to cover it up by making claims about other gameplay elements or how you prefer it anyway.
I had a ton of fucking fun playing MH3U with my friends. But I'm not talking about that. I'm still looking forward to MHG. I'll buy it day one and play it online with anyone I can.
...despite it having the worst resolution, worst screen size, etc.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Im not denying it, i just consider it a non-issue. In some ways i even agree. When i played the MH4U demo i hated how terrible the maps looked compared to MH3U, and even now i still think it looks worse, but that is not enough to make me hate the game. If you can stop obsessing over the graphics and actually play the game, you would probably love it. To each their own, i guess.
You really should skim through that MHO video. Looks so much better than Frontier. Here, ill even post a guide someone made on digg that details how to play the game...

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
I'm not "obsessing over graphics" I'm just trying to point out how a frustrating problem in the franchise, the camera controls, are at their all-time worst in these 3DS games because the game has gotten scrunched down in terms of resolution.
I'm sure I will have a ton of fun playing MHG with dudes. Those new gunlance skills look sick. I'm excited to go back to the ol' LBG and HBG again with some new movement options. There's a ton of new shit here I'm going to ahve a lot of fun using...
...but I will be grappling with the 3DS visuals the whole time. As will you too. We would both benefit if there were some stronger hardware and a bigger screen underneath this title. This is one of those rare times when the graphics actually impact the gameplay.
I haven't really looked into MHO. I looked into Frontier ages ago and everything I saw looked like shit. MonHun with even more bland MMO designs and grind. No thanks. With that in mind I've just avoided anything they've been mumbling about new online PC Monster Hunters. Is MHO the one they parterned with the Chinese company who was ripping off MonHun anyway to make?
EDIT: Ugh they're going with the exhaust model and not just cosmetic shit. I'll stick to PSO2.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Yeah MHO is the F2P Chinese version. MMO-ized MH game that apparently isnt as pay-2-win as we all feared. The ticket system seems really silly, but other than that, its probably worth playing if you do not mind the Chinese text(people are working on an English patch).
Like i said, the camera controls are great once you get used to it. This is coming from someone who had no issues with the claw silliness from MHFU. Again, did you play MH4U? Personally im skipping MHG as it looks like it has way less content than MH4U. Ill wait for MHGU or MH5U, if they ever happen.

Pssh your loss. You are skipping the best MH game on 3DS to play the worst(well, in my opinion).

I got a little jaded by the gimmicky weapons they kept adding. I've never really like SWAXE and don't think it fits well with the other weapons thematically. Then they doubled-down on it and gave us Bug Glaive and Charge Blade and I was like...ehhh....
IMO the thematically best looking games are MH3U and MHP3. I really liked how MH3U/Tri had that pacific islander look to it. Everything had a really gentle look to it, a very soft look. MHP3 was a really sharp looking game. That blue orange contrast. Jinogre as the cover monster.
All the promotional shots for MH4U I saw were just way too colorful. Just a vomit of rainbows and stuff, I couldn't do it. I doubt the game actually looks like that in play but the screenshots I looked at when it was coming out were like MonHun: Lisa Frank edition.

Like I said just personal preference here. 4U was just way too saturated for me.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Well i agree with MH3U. That game looked great. I still prefer its visuals over MH4U.
The two new weapons in MH4U are really damn overpowered. IG can put out insane DPS and allows you to mount monsters all damn day. Then the CB has better KO ability than the hammer, better guarding than the Lance/Gunlance(once you charge the CB shield) and can put out enough damage to kill a G-rank monster really fast. It even has a broken ability called "Guard Points" which are basically like rolling i-frames. You get the Guard Point during the weapons transformation from Sword & Shield to Axe mode. Its a short frame, but pro players abuse the hell out of it.

>transforming right through the explosion
Noice.
>all dat L button spam to keep the camera on him
Even the Pro's do it.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what is possible with the styles.
I don't mind not having as many upper rank monsters in exchange for more tech with each weapon.
After 10+ years of this game I've had enough of that shit.
Yian Kut-Ku -> Blue Yian Kut-Ku = shitty design stop this
Yian Kut-Ku -> Yian Garuga = yes more like this please

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Yeah the lock-on spam is the best way to track the monster. It can be annoying given that MH4U is very vertical. You need to use the D-pad to adjust the camera sometimes, but its better than the older MH games once you get used to it. Camera controls have always been a pain in MH games.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Nah. It's got a lot more quests, weapons, armor, and non-subspecies monsters than 4U, even without G-rank. The high-level Ferocious monsters are apparently supposed to be comparable in difficulty to level 140 guild quests, too.Alex Crimson wrote:Personally im skipping MHG as it looks like it has way less content than MH4U.

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Can someone explain this French meme?
I think it has something to do with the FR players of MH4U being really bad?

Re: MONSTAH HUNTAH?
Yeah, there was a running joke about the French being awful at it, particularly mounting monsters and getting thrown.

it verifiably has less content then 4Ujaxy15 wrote:Nah. It's got a lot more quests, weapons, armor, and non-subspecies monsters than 4U, even without G-rank.
