Leaving aside the games you type the move, you can get some of those shitty Choice of adventure games. Some are survival based, most are terribad.

Not really at all what you're asking about, but there's a game on Steam called event[0] where you have to talk to a computer AI thing to try and escape somewhere, it has a fair amount of typing. Be my guinea pig and tell me if it's good or not http://store.steampowered.com/app/470260/

is it going to actually have the sort of no min/max high depth sometimes storyline that hellmoo had or is it going to be cdda in a different style

It's interesting. You're gonna be fighting with the text parser a fair amount and it's quite resource intensive but it does have some quite intelligent programming. You're also gonna have to figure out for yourself on what to do when you're "hacking".Anonmare wrote:I'll be your guinea pig Shaps. Ahh. If you want to play some good ones of those go check out other old MUDs. I used to play AlexMUD back in the day.
Someone did make a browser-based MUD that seemed pretty interested but I can't remember what it was called now.
This looks like it could be cool?

It's a good concept but poor executionTimbrewolf wrote: This looks like it could be cool?

Essentially, everything is 'premium' only as far as most features go, and if you don't minmax EVERYTHING, then everyone will die 3-4 nights in(6-7 if you're lucky). This means that a large chunk of content is basically a noob trap. Upgrade your own house before the guides say it is acceptable for maximum defence? You are now marked as a griefer and will be killed on sight in all future games. Want to own your own radio or some shiny furniture/pets? Not allowed. That goes into the group item pool or you will be killed for not cooperating with the group. Want to eat food/drink water more than you absolutely need to to stay alive and/or to do something neat for yourself? Not allowed, you're wasting group resources and are a griefer.
This would be a whole lot less of a problem if the game's difficulty didn't ramp up at the rate it does, but the way Die2nite is as far as my knowledge goes, it's essentially following the same guide every game and hoping you get good RNG searching for stuff early on. And good RNG on building placements later on.
From the same creators, Mush, is similar, but a little bit more forgiving and traitor-based instead. I'd recommend Mush over Die2nite, and if we are playing then I'm in
Mush is also really annoying on the premium-ness, but it's much less painfully so. There are ways to metagame it hard(Literally counting the amount of actions people take to see who is not putting in 100% in 100% efficient ways, off-site applications that keep track of all the items so tators can't steal stuff, etc) and get the traitor worked out, but if you avoid doing those and don't play with people who do then it's pretty good.

God, that sounds horrible, I hate games where the veterans act like entitled assholes, never giving even a minute to the new players to learn.XSI wrote:*snip*
Upgrading the house before time sounds like a normal mistake of someone learning, not the actions of a griefer ruining a game

Re: Text Based Survival Game
Yeah, but the thing is, the difficulty is so tight that any mistake made, or selfish use of resources practically guarantees the town dies in just a few days instead of a week or so. And many things the veterans do is for maximum efficiency which they absolutely do need to not die really quickly
Not that there is winning in Die2nite. It's mostly just about lasting as long as you can before you die. It just happens to not last much past a few days because of how hard it is, and people get really butthurt over it. Mostly because the premium stuff is EXPENSIVE, and per day. So if you 'waste' a day on an inefficient town then you've thrown away money.
The concept of the game is solid. The execution is lacking and the playerbase is doing exactly as the devs arranged for them- Not by design, but by monetisation and difficulty curve. It can use a lot of work, but I'm fairly sure the devs have stopped caring by now. It's a nice try, at least.
Mush is much better in that regard, there is a win condition, and every action except outright sabotage tends to be helpful in some way. It's much more friendly to new players, though the monetisation remains fairly poorly implemented and if people have a hardon for traitor hunting then the traitors will die every single time. But that doesn't mean they LOSE, mind you. The traitor's job in that is to make the ship die before it can jump back to earth with a cure. And space is a dangerous place that often leads to the ship being blown to bits anyway.
On text based survival though, I used to casually play this zombies vs survivors game, browserbased. Barely any graphics and most of it was a few fortified buildings with survivors in it, and zombies beating on the barricades with their actions. And mostly just a whole lot of dying over and over.
Quarantine or something it was called. It was decent. Wonder how it's doing.

Re: Text Based Survival Game
Yeah, I used to play Urban Dead. Was great for a while rampaging around with a decent sized horde, especially back before survivors could drag bodies to the gates of the military bases. Back then they were hilarious noobtraps for the military-wannabe "take the fort" dipshits because it was impossible to hold them once the zombies actually got in. Playing as zombie really sucked if you didn't find a group though 'cause most survivor players saw you as just XP rather than as other players.

Checked out Urban dead
That was not the one I played
The one I played was a much smaller map, and had piles of items laying about that survivors could share with eachother. Urban Dead doesn't allow item sharing/trading

Re: Text Based Survival Game
After a while the only really fun thing to do was go around murdering the people who took it super-seriously
like sometimes you'd get a group of ultra-serious wannabe-military survivor groups who were gonna be like "take back the city" and the like, or ULTIMATE BADASSSSSSSS character descriptions with katanas and trenchcoats and other matrix shit and it was funny as fuck to just unload on them and toss them off the roof
A bunch of people even set up out-of-game PK-tracker things where butthurt players could submit screenshots of being killed and the killer would end up getting their name put in a fucking list with browser extensions and everything, it was a ridiculous amount of effort that went into metagame tools for this damn game
