tl'dr as I see it

May gambled on the UKIP voters ditching UKIP as being no longer relevant post-referendum and hoped that'd swing her a bunch of marginal seats, instead got fucked because May is actually pure electoral poison to the more libertarian leaning of the marginal tory voters. Basically she massively underestimated the "socially liberal but fiscally conservative" wing that usually vote tory but don't want anything to do with the person that made the investigatory powers bill a thing and wants to go even further with the internet censorship and literally repeal the human rights act.

The tories can pretty much be summed up right now by the whole porn bill thing, where they banned the plebs from anything other than the missionary position while the PM at the time was someone who literally jerked off into a dead pig.
