People dont eat food which makes bartenders and chefs and botanists sorta bored

People used to have to eat food or they would get really slow, this was annoying

People really hate it when their sprite gets changed which is why lizards get mad when you cut their tail and people freak out about sex changes, shaving their head, and rad storms

So maybe to encourage food eating if you don't eat food for a while you turn skinny and flies buzz around you for being a stinky famine boy

You can eat vending machine food to avoid this but too much vending machine food will give you acne and everyone will call you Craterface

Just have the buffs from food be pretty significant, but reduce their impact every time you eat the same food.

That way eating good AND diverse food is promoted.

this would be a pain to balance nicely but yeah

also maybe encourage "fresh" food so you don't powergame it by taking the entire counter of food - food is "fresh" for a short time after being made and will retain freshness while in a fridge or something (chefs can still load food into vending machines, right? that would work as well) but will lose it if you just keep it in your bag

basically, if you want to make food relevant, this is the list of what to do

-make it so you don't get fat after eating like one or two slices of pizza
-make it so that food gives buffs
-don't make the buffs absurdly good but don't make them completely irrelevant, there needs to be a balance between 0.001% buffs and stun resist carrots
-make it so that rarer/more complex food provides better buffs than easier food
-make it so that a variety of food works better than loading up with an entire pizza or something
-make it so that the buffs become weaker/nonexistent if you carry food around with you for fear of a fight or something

this would mean that vending machine junkfood wouldn't be irrelevant because if you just want to not be starving, you can eat that, but if you want to be as good as possible you need to interact with the bartender/chef

I still say we should implement the calorie types.
Protein gives you a chance to heal per tick
Carbs increase run speed or decrease stun time
Fat makes you metabolise slower, so your effects last longer/you won't be as hungry as often

The effects can be changed around but you get the gist. It's a lot more practical than making special buffs for each food item, and you can just decide what the macros are for any new food item.

could do both

specific foods have different values for each calorie, exotic foods are better, and then you can add snowflake buffs to SOME foods

that's probably the best way to do it tbh

Our combat / medical systems are not complex enough to give unique buffs to food without also decreasing the relevancy of the medical department.

Entering the hunger red zone should make you do less damage at first, slow at second, and slowly take brute at third. The levels aren't hard lines either so in one instance it may take you forever to get to the slow whereas other times it may give you a slow almost immediately. Eat eat eat!

Food is pointless in short rounds, there is no way around this besides making them powerups or something of the sort.

How much Enchiladas giving a buff which would reduce brute damage taken by 1 would affect combat and medical department? I don't really remember damage numbers.

Just go with what makes sense, medical buffs. Well fed spessmen bleed less, regenerate blood, better immunity to diseases, more stamina, etc.
