Health, nutrition, and natural healing
After playing Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead for the past few weeks, I had an idea about changing food and nutrition in a few ways, but I wanted to get some feedback before I just made it out of nowhere.
The gist of it would be that there is now a hidden value for overall "health" - not in the "how many hits you can take" sense, but "how well you're eating and physical wellness." This starts neutrally at zero and, if modified, regresses towards that zero at a rate depending on how high it is, with a variety of factors influencing it. First of all, different foods modify health in different ways; heavily processed junk food like cheesie honkers and donk pockets would be generally unhealthy, while freshly-cooked meals from the chef might be healthier. Some reagents, like liplocide, might rapidly reduce it (as a remedy for hypervitaminosis), while the medical bay might have a limited supply of gamma globulin injections that massively boost it (as a way of treating malnourishment.) Not eating enough would also reduce it for obvious reasons, as would eating too much!
Being well-fed and eating right would have benefits to your health! To make use of the new wellness system, humans would have inbuilt natural healing. This would be very weak, and anything more than a scrape or bruise would still require first aid. However, taking 1 burn damage from being near a breach for a moment might slowly heal over several minutes, with perhaps a rate of 0.01 brute/burn per tick (numbers are hypothetical!) Your immune system also plays a part, meaning that damage dealt by toxins is slowly recovered at a slightly higher rate, like 0.1 for a healthy and nourished human.
It should be noted that while being healthy and fit would speed up natural healing and strengthen the immune system, not getting the proper vitamins you need would have the opposite effect of slowing it down. If a healthy human heals 0.01 brute and burn per tick, one who eats only junk food might only heal 0.008, or even 0.005 if they're very malnourished. As another thing, virology symptoms like Weight Even would not influence health in any way, meaning that without eating you would remain at a neutral state indefinitely.
This system would encourage chefs to create good meals while not shoehorning them into min/maxing to determine the best food to make; any food with vitamins would help bolster the immune system. Botany, mining, and the medical bay could also provide fresh plants, butchered meat, and vitamin/nutritional supplements respectively, which would all provide outlets instead of the lack of a competent chef dooming the crew to mass malnutrition. It would also not severely punish players who go for the more convenient route of eating from vending machines, as the regression of health towards the mean and abundance of supplements means that they won't become starving husks compared to the posthuman
paragons of health that eat the scrambled eggs the chef is dishing out. For those that do care, it would provide an incentive to interact with other crew and makes cooks more relevant than they currently are.
Thoughts, ideas, and suggestions all welcome. All of this is theoretical, but if it's well-received I would be able to code it myself.

Re: Health, nutrition, and natural healing
Oh hey, a nutrition system rework that DOESN'T punish people for not having a Chef!
Jokes aside, this does seem like a neato way to add incentive towards eating actual foods, and likewise, add some sort of benefit towards the cook and his wares. Granted, not enough to make the set of dishes he has all worthwhile to make, but I don't suppose that needs to be the aim of this. Any attention the Chef can get that isn't "I'mma crawl over the counter and eat your wares while you're busy" is always good to see.
And as an added benefit, this'd help curb back tiny amounts of damage from being a thing, so that's always nice.

Re: Health, nutrition, and natural healing
Pretty cool idea. Maybe we can add treadmills or something to the gym that make you hungry but increase your health briefly.
Perhaps health could factor into other things, too, like punch damage or incredibly slight melee brute damage resistance.

LIFT. THOSE. WEIGHTS. In reality we do already have the weight and stacking machines in the gym that don't have a current use other than fluff or silliness.PKPenguin321 wrote:Pretty cool idea. Maybe we can add treadmills or something to the gym that make you hungry but increase your health briefly.

I've made a PR for this at GitHub, so feel free to see how it's implemented there and offer input.

I suggested adding this since forever and I got told it was pointless to add due to virology

This post was made by Nilons who is currently on your ignore list. Display this post.
This was actually in some way prompted by a PR that Kor made that removes the passive healing symptoms from Virology, but even if that PR doesn't pass, I think the passive healing serves more as a way to heal papercuts and let you slightly lick wounds then to actually serve as a method of healing severe damage. It's moreso meant to simulate blood clotting and the body's immune response to toxins.Anonmare wrote:I suggested adding this since forever and I got told it was pointless to add due to virology

Re: Health, nutrition, and natural healing
it's a bad post because you act like xhuis has to be chained to only working on clock cult forever now
side projects are not a big deal dude, taking a day to make something else probably helps avoid burning out
"code bloat" is also kinda dumb to say when it's reworking something, this isn't just adding on a bunch of pointless bullshit

Re: Health, nutrition, and natural healing
I'm already burned out, but I do occasionally feel like coding, which is when I make stuff like this. I think CC is functional and the reception is primarily positive so I'm making other stuff so I still enjoy the work.
