Are you afraid it's too complicated? It's not!
Here I present a simple guide to making emojis, illustrated by BYOND.
First, you will want to navigate to icons/emoji.dmi

It should look something like this:

Next, right-click on an empty space and click New Pixmap...

You will then be presented with BYOND's pixmap editor, sprite your emoji here, I have created a terrible horrible version of the nanotrasen logo for demonstration purposes.

Alternatively, you can select Import... if you have already sprited an icon in another program.

Whichever method you use, your shiny brand new emoji should appear in the list.

Next, you will rightclick on this icon and click Edit State...

You will be presented with this kind of window, in the box, put in the name of the emoji. This name will be used to invoke the emoji. It MUST BE LOWER CASE and it MUST BE ALPHANUMERIC, NO SPACES

I have already given the demonstration emoji an appropriate name:

And you're done! The emoji code will dynamically recognize the new emoji and it will be available for use!
Let's see that wonderful new emoji in action! (After you compile of course)

Now just PR the new change to the /tg/station master-... What, you don't know how to use git?
Uh...
