Name Timeouts
When I'm a clown, mime or cyborg, I want to give myself a thematic name to match my mime/clown partner in crime, or whatever the AI's called itself.
But it seems that we STILL have these stupid, unmarked name timeouts of about 15 seconds or so, after which you don't get to choose your name and are given a default name instead. It's certainly like this with cyborgs, and it's a pain in the arse.
Can we get this fixed, please? I've not put it in the Git because I think it's a bad oversight, not a bug.

Re: Name Timeouts
I don't think removing them entirely would be a good idea since some people will abuse that to change names midround, but upping it to like five minutes probably wouldnt do much harm.

Re: Name Timeouts
The way it's done really needs to be handled better in general. You should be setting it up in the preferences screen instead of upon spawning.

Re: Name Timeouts
It also only takes 30 seconds to ahelp an admin and get them to change your name. Its a pretty simple edit as well
Whatever

Not ideal for cyborgs, especially since this name edit is essentially useless if you haven't picked a module yet (doing so resets your name).peoplearestrange wrote:It also only takes 30 seconds to ahelp an admin and get them to change your name. Its a pretty simple edit as well

We don't really have any decent system for handling this stuff yet.

I play clown/mime frequently, have experienced this frequently due to lag, and as such ahelp this a lot. I don't remember an admin ever doing anything but saying "lol sucks to be you" or changing the name to something rude.peoplearestrange wrote:It also only takes 30 seconds to ahelp an admin and get them to change your name. Particularly bad for mimes because their default name is their character name, not a random mime name

Re: Name Timeouts
Admins do fix names, At least basilmins do.
Last night a guy asked for a rename and fayrik did it twice (only because he fucked it up the first time but still)

Re: Name Timeouts
Its generally not a big deal to rename someone, the vars list for it even automatically takes care of your PDA and ID too. That said it would be nice to have the timer run just a wee bit longer, I try to wait and see if the AI is doing a name gimmick before I name my borg and I take too long about 50% of the time.

Thank you so much for immortalizing that moment forever.Remie Richards wrote:and fayrik did it twice (only because he fucked it up the first time but still)
It's not like I ever wanted to forget misnaming a clown or anything(!)
I always change people's names on request though. Unless that request has dubious motive, which I'm yet to actually encounter.
But I definitely agree that this is something that's much easier to handle as an admin than it is with code.

Re: Name Timeouts
Still, I feel that increasing the timer enough to have some breathing room - a minute, tops - would solve the issue and remove the necessity of frequent requests.
