I doubt an N on a wrench is going to motivate people who weren't interested before to learn to play SS13.

If you can't see the direct and overwhelmingly negative effects a massive new player migration to an entirely knowledge based game will have on the functionality of each round on even a basic level, you're not sensible enough to have an argument with.MisterPerson wrote:New players? Grow up.
A steady stream of new players who slowly become acclimated is fine, it's what we're used to dealing with. A large influx of new players will drown us all in piss and tank the server.

Re: Defensive Server Response To Shitty ION E3 Trailer
Look at it from all sides, folks.
Yes, we were all new once. But we weren't all new AT ONCE. SS13 has always been the kind of game where the best way to learn is by doing it yourself whilst being constructively berated by a head of staff, which just isn't viable for a department full of complete and utter newbies. I understand the fear of the server drive being changed, too - in theory, if too many people come in at once with little understanding, OOC culture becomes the way the server operates, at least for a while. I've seen it happen in other games - for some reason, the rush just begins to ignore rules they've definitely been taught and marginalise the more established players. That's no good.
At the same time, we always need injections of new blood, and there's definitely such a thing as being way too defensive. After all, many of us here are walk-ins from 4chan, of all places - we, like the Party Van, are a 4chan-sourced, yet now independent body, but consider which of our numbers wouldn't be here were it not for threads in places that, let's face it, are considered the worst places on the internet by some. There's a good chance that somebody smart enough to follow a trailer hint and a bit of developer chatter in this direction will be smart enough to fit right in here. This could be the breath of fresh air we needed.
Now, could somebody remind me how the Panic Bunker mode works? Something like simply disabling players with playtime less than X hours from anything other than assistant, right?

New players are great. Two or three new players per round, who can watch people do things the right way, and ask for advice. A steady, small stream that can get acclimated over time.
Anything more than ~20% of the crew being new is going to make the game not fun for everyone. Admins will be working overtime, long term players are going to be mystified by the surge in grief and general incompetence, each round would fall apart due to a lack of players skilled in essential job, as if brainrot was released every round at start. We're barely holding things together with the summer rush as it is.
I notice that a lot of the people arguing for a massive influx of new players are Basilites. Come on Sybil and play for a few rounds, see what it's like at the moment before advocating for a potentially massive influx of newbies.
We're not a MOBA or FPS. This isn't Minecraft. In a multiplayer game with a high learning curve and a high skill peak like SS13, too large a ratio of new players will spell disaster.

We still get new players. We get a trickle of new players who are few enough in number that they only slightly affect the functions of a round, and who are spread out thinly enough to be surrounded and taught by players who have been established, but are numerous enough to replace our losses and slightly increase the community size as time goes on.
Too many new players at once creates a situation where the blind are leading the blind, new players don't learn anything, the experienced players will be overwhelmed and either jump ship or refuse to teach, and the server skill capacity diminishing to make every round boring.
No one is advocating for no new players. We are simply pointing out that this game will not handle a massive influx of new players in any manner but a negative one.

I'd say that your view of the game is broken.Tunder wrote:Making your text supersized isn't going to enforce your fundamentally broken view of how this game works.
When you play SS13, a functioning station is often the most boring, because nothing's going wrong. Stuff needs to go wrong for ss13 to be interesting. You know how all the fun stories of SS13 that players mention come start playing go? They usually involve large scale chaos and trying to survive in it. A dysfunctional crew IS large scale chaos.Tunder wrote:New players need to be immersed in a functioning station in order to learn how the game and the different major jobs operate.
And? That's not a bad thing. The game isn't supposed to be stable as fuck. You're supposed to have chaos. SS13 was designed around chaos.Tunder wrote:Too many new players makes the station inoperable due to a lack of general knowledge and ability. We already see this every year during the summer months.
See, here's where your view of the game is broken. SS13 is supposed to destabilize. It's not supposed to be stable and safe. It's supposed to be unstable and dangerous.Tunder wrote:There is a limit to how many new players we can take without completely destabilizing.
Not everyone has to be part of your ERP club to play the game, you know. I often find that playing the game with OOC off, and randomnames and crap enabled, leads to a far better experience then caring about who is who.Tunder wrote:Attempting a strawman validhunter argument against me, an advocate for more RP on Sybil, shows how disconnected you are.

Our culture already died years ago when /v/ invaded and we had 100 person rounds daily where we previously had 30 at primetime.
And the server culture is very different from when I left despite the overall numbers falling.
Very few of the people I used to play with in 2013 are still here, and almost nobody from 2010.
As much as I miss those people and those playstyles there wouldn't be a server at all anymore if we'd locked out new people. Fresh blood is good.

Re: Defensive Server Response To Shitty ION E3 Trailer
You keep showing ignorance for how this game runs. Most round types require a base amount of crew competency in order to balance the round. You need a functioning Medbay, a functioning Sec department, a functioning Engineering team, at the bare minimum, to keep a round going. Your row row anarchist bullshit doesn't fit the reality of the game, and would result in immediate shuttle calls due to no maintenance or upkeep whatsoever.iamgoofball wrote:-snip-

No, I'm very realistically worried that >30% of a given round being complete newfriends is going to ruin the game, which it will. We deal with new players in small numbers, and we give them the basics and hope for the best. There is no established training regime as a result, and this is the easiest way to run things. Too many new players will overwhelm our ability as a community to teach them. They won't read the wiki, and gameplay will devolve as a resultiamgoofball wrote:then why the fuck are you going off about cultural dilation and crap and acting like new players are the end of the world?Tunder wrote:There's no reason to fuck it up again with claims of 'muh secret club' and validhunting strawmen.
are you this butthurt that maybe you have to play spacemans with filthy plebians who aren't masters at the game for a few rounds before they figure out how the game works?
We have a Goldilocks number, a maximum percentage of a given round that can be new without damaging that round. We go over that, and it'll break the game with incompetence.

No one has actually proven that this will generate hordes of new players. Until then, regardless of whether it will 'ruin the server' or not, this is completely retarded.
