Food makes a lot of sense as a limit to how long you can be in private, secure areas with no interaction with other people. Not only that but they spawn next to a shitload of tools and are expected to break in to places. They're basically engineers who don't have to set up the engine (or have access to space suits at roundstart, though it's not exactly hard to get into EVA).
