Is there really no other way of making the drake fight challenging than to make it impossible to fight without having zero slowdown?

You could fight it in a Ripley. All you really need is an upgraded power cell (such as a super) and a mech plasma cutter. You can get one of these in about 10-15 minutes on average if you bug the Robos roundstart. I have done it twice on a test server (no admin memes except spawning the mech and cutter). It is a bit difficult, but if you dig a nice clear area to give yourself running space and make intelligent use of strafing mode, then you will be fine. You also have the advantage of being immune to the fire breath attacks.

It is slow while inside the station, but decently fast once you get it out onto the basalt.
