It never recovered from losing the empire, it has been on a downward spiral ever since. Brexit will just accelerate it but the collapse was already inevitable. The most likely outcome is the UK becoming a client state of the US, losing economic and political freedom in the next century until complete absorption.ThanatosRa wrote:I'm actually feeling like the United Kingdom, which has lasted for how long now? I doubt the US is gonna add more states. 50 is perfect and remaking all the flags alone would be a gargantuan task. Puertorico and the other colonies including the UK will just keep their current status forever.

I don't want any more states solely because 50 is a nice round number and adding more would ruin it

Brexit probably won't happen tbh.
If it does then Scottish independence is an inevitability.

I don't know, the UK porn ban is starting soon and there's someone still fighting it in EU courts
They might decide to brexit just so they can censor the internet without having to worry about the EU courts

I don't think the integrity of the UK is constitutionally guaranteed (or whatever they have in place of a constitution) so there would be no legal basis for a war.

NHS would rather keel over and die naturally than let the Americans try to subsidize it, for better or worse.

Re: 2k19 /pol/ - European Spring edition
The NHS as it is can't cope with its load
You're looking at a year to get some surgeries, and their mental health service is a shambles - you're looking at two years for an initial assessment
Now the American model itself is horrible for one reason, the lack of regulation that prevents them price gauging the premiums

Re: 2k19 /pol/ - European Spring edition
Which is exactly why an insurance-based system is able to sustain itself. Healthcare is INCREDIBLY expensive. Even the easiest blood test costs hundreds of dollars because it requires expensive lab machinery and trained personnel. That's why state-sponsored healthcare is always a loss-making enterprise, and the token sum they make you pay for health services is mostly so that you won't use them for stupid reasons. It doesn't cover even 1% of the true costs. If you turn it into a business, with private companies that not only need to break even but to net a profit as well, such prices are to be expected.Malkevin wrote:price gauging the premiums

Insurance costs on their own balloon medical costs in America. There's a reason that most doctor's offices will take sometimes as low as 40% of you pay in cash.

One would think that the American healthcare system would inevitably teach people to take great care of their own health since they risk going bankrupt if they don't (because money is more important than health in the western world), and yet here we are.

The main reason the NHS is struggling is because of the massive underfunding for the past 10 years and a good portion of the staff and recruitment base came from...... The EU.

Funnily enough many NHS staff enjoyed their work. When they were properly paid and the hospitals were properly funded. They've had a pay freeze for an age.
You only need to look at how the Scottish NHS is now the best in the UK, because the Scottish government makes up for what Westminster is cutting.

Re: 2k19 /pol/ - European Spring edition
Over the past two years polls have shown the majority of brits would like a tax increase to better fund the NHS. It's stupid how income tax has become untouchable. I'd support an even larger rise in income tax if it was accompanied by a drop in sales tax.

I looked myself, 20% is roughly what I pay and I feel that's too much
And then you go up a bracket and it's 40%? That's insane, why even work nearly half your work week if you'll never touch it?

That's just the rates for income tax.Takeguru wrote:I looked myself, 20% is roughly what I pay and I feel that's too much

The NHS is also funded by a separate 'totally not a tax guys' 'National Insurance Contributions'.
Which are 12% of your weekly income (I can't remember if that's calced pre or post tax) up to about a grand of weekly income, then it's 2% of the remaining weekly earnings.
Our tax system is stupidly complex.
We get a tax free allowance of the first 12k you earn per year
Then from that to 50k it's 20% on your income minus the allowance
After 50k it's 40% on your remaining earnings minus the previous calc - but above 100k you start losing that tax free allowance, at 125k you lose it entirely
Any incoming above 125k gets taxed at 45%
Although we salaries being as shit as there are in the UK, its not like most of us will ever pay the higher rate tax
