Anyone here a computer wizard? {Tech/Opt Thread}

Post by srifenbyxp » #203369

My primary HDD got fucked so I just tossed in a new 1TB HDD, it's alive as you can see but my 2nd HDD filled with hentai, funny pictures and game save data isn't showing up in disk management. Actually made a post about it here:http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id- ... ement.html

No, like a retard I didn't plug it in; basil station is now active. Artyom is now my new Primary HDD, rip Sybil. I'll have to reformat it and bring it back to life.

I don't fully understand your problem.

Did you:

A) have two drives initially, first one died, replaced it, now the second one isnt working

B) have one drive, it died, bought a new primary drive, old drive isn't working as a secondary drive

You should bounce the tachyon particle beam off the main deflector shield.
That should sort you out.

If i didn't know better I'd want to use outdated knowledge to suggest looking at the jumpers on the HDD to make sure it's set to a slave drive.

I think that only matters when using IDE cables anymore? I think even sata-ide is intelligent enough to assign whatever you tell it to.

Need help from a computer wizard

My laptop charger was sparking and emitting smoke from the power brick. It also hissed at me and a small candle-like flame came out of the input port.
How do I fix this?

Already tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. The hissing resumes and sparks come out again, but no flame so I think that fixed it a little but not entirely

Do you think I could get something from it selling second hand?
I double checked at the time and my laptop continued to charge while the powerblock sparked, so it has to be somewhat functional still

It also left a small scorchmark on my floor

I'm afraid your charger has been possessed by Zeus, you will need to take it to your nearest WEEE.centre for disposal as it is illegal in the EU to own devices containing ancient gods

Can't seem to get my Athlon 64 dual core to cool down. Randomly shuts down when I'm gaming.

Averaging 60-70 degrees idle, 90-110 gaming. Kept it stable at about 100 degrees Celsius for the last 6 months but the shut downs are getting frequent.

Any suggestions?

Have you cleaned the case cpu recently? Is fan working fine? Replace thermal paste.

Although I'm not sure how did you get to that point in the first place. I built my AMD 4800+ rig 9-10 years ago, it still runs on stock cooler just fine iddling around 45.

Uhh... that CPU is probably around ten or more years old.

You've probably got dust hares clogging up your cooling system, and if you used cheap thermal paste its probably dried out its conductive fluids and replaced it with insulating air pockets.

I was in an old rig I had. 560 TI. Was looking through it for old times.

I couldn't find my Chassis fan slot, so I spliced the power cords for the chassis fan with the CPU fan.

Conductive paste was top of the line. Atleast back in the day.

Surprisingly the rig still works.

Yeah, that powerblock has been removed, it's never going to get used again.
Though I did previously manage to fix a case like this way back in school. Got like 2 years of extra lifespan out of it but if anyone even looked at the wires wrong it would start up again

On the not cooling thing, double check your fans. A friend of mine put together a computer and couldn't figure out why it didn't cool
Until he noticed the fans weren't turned on

Maybe the cpu fan isn't getting enough voltage because the case fan is hogging it all.
Download hwmonitor and check your fan rpms, cpu fans usually idle at around 3500 rpm.

I slapped a H40 water cooler on it later. Dropped the heat from 70 idle to 20 idle. I still have the Athlon stored with the spare goods. The little chip that reached well over 105 Celsius weekly.

And it still works.

*Grumble grumble grumble* everyone hates you and wants to make your life harder than it should be.

Year ago - one of my sites is throwing out some old laptops. I don't have a laptop of my own, and they're not *that* old.
Naturally I pinch one of the disposal pile, it'll only have been shipped off to ongo bongo land and donated to nigg kids anyway.

Get it home, flatten it, decide to stick windows 10 on it for some reason.
Realise that though its not bad on RAM or CPU the LAN and WLAN are shit - 10/100 ethernet and 54mb wifi.

Oh well, I was only planning to use it for torrenting whilst at work instead of using my much more power hungry gaming rig - so those will do... right?
Nope, attempting to stream FHD to my main computer (because no HDMI port) would constantly stutter.
Streaming would work most of the time but sometimes the connection was a bit shitty and it would buffer until I reset my connection.

Anyway, flash forward to a few weeks ago.
New PC roll outs at a different site. Old PCs go in storage to collect dust.
Weeks later: "My computer isn't showing my icons or documents". Shit fuck balls - shit cunt roofers had put in a new lowered ceiling and cut the cat5 going to the network point... both of them.

Oh yeah, old PCs had PCIe wifi cards... for some reason only known to the old fucktard of a previous tech.
Oh hey, these cards aren't half bad - 300mb/s

Oh hey... these cards are actually adaptors with antennas to fit a normal slim line case, the actually wifi controller is a laptop sized module... ahhhh

Finally get round to pinching one today.
Pop open my craptop to swap wifi modules. Oh hey, there's only one antenna line - guess I'll stick it on MAIN.

Boot laptop, w10 detects it and installs the driver straight away
So far so good... hmph - looks like w10 canned the saved wifis profiles for reasons.
Try to connect it to my router... connection has failed - what?

Tether to my phone... that works fine.
Try a different driver to make sure windows wasn't retarded and installed the wrong one, this is a windows 8 driver.
Nope, nothing different.

Maybe my router doesn't like this wifi card, have a look online.
Yep, lots of folks saying their wifi doesn't work right after a router firmware update... last year.
Check my router firmware - oh hey, its that one that was causing problems - is there an update? Yes there is! - Where can I download it?... my ISP doesn't give out manual updates, tossers. Only option would be to revert my router firmware... don't really want to do that.

See some other folk saying they got their wifi working by turning off the IPv6 options on the router.
Try that.
Fuck all difference.
Realise these folk are laytards that probably don't have a fucking clue what IPv6 is and by turn off their probably meant reverting their firmware.

*grumble* Might have to do a firmware downgrade after all.
Screw it, lets try a windows 7 driver first.
Install, restart.
"The device failed to start due to an error" bah!
Fine, lets try the other non descriptively named inf file and see if that will work
Huzzah, great success! Device is working.

Lets try connecting to the SSID again... holy shit it actually worked - i'm finally connected to my wifi.
Let see if I can get on the net... yes I can! Yay.... wait why are pages taking so long to load.... wait, why does speedof.me look like a saw blade and why is the speed measured in kb/s....wait why the fuck is the ping to my router constatly over 1,0000ms???

*grumble grumble* Right, pry open the access panel... maybe its using the other radio port that doesn't have an antenna and thats why its so shitty.
Disconnect the antenna -
"destination unreachable,
destination unreachable,
destination unreachable..."
Oh fuck off, it really was getting that shitty performance on MAIN link which did have an antenna.

Don't tell me its a driver issue... connect antenna to AUX
"1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 102ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms, 1ms"

Finally you mother fucker, you actually work!

Its always the things you think will be straight forward and simple that you end up burning hours and swearing at.
