Remote piloted robots for Engineers

Post by linelynnline » #121245

Sorta inspired from SOMA, it would be cool to have pilot seats that engineers can sit in and remote control some sort of robot.

It would mean that Engineers could set up the emitters without the need for hardsuits, or set up the solars without ever leaving engineering. Added safety and efficiency for engineers.

Draw backs could include being locked into the pilot seat until you return the robot to a bay or after a set number of minutes.
Hacking a seat while a pilot is in it and unaware could cause the engineers consciousness to get stuck in the robot. (Or hacking the robot itself while it's in use)

Destroying a robot while its connected to a user could cause feedback to hurt the pilot (like how a guardian works)

I'm not sure how possible any of this is using the code, but after chatting about it on the irc it seemed like it might be worth posting about it. I just really liked the idea of engineers piloting robots to do their work easier with the risk of getting stuck.

This is the part of SOMA that got me thinking about it. (Mild spoilers) https://youtu.be/vyzMwFss_MA?t=176

Umm

Remote Probes.txt

Hilariously, also inspired by SOMA that I finished on the 23rd.
Sadly I'm busy atm so any work *I'd* do towards it won't be for a while, but hey.

Code wise I think it'd be pretty simple. You'd mindswap into a simple animal, which would have a var to track the user, and it'd bump you back to said user when you stopped using the robot.

Would also do regular check ups on the pilot like the guardian does to see if they got incapacitated.

I was thinking of doing similar for the mini tank sprites Nienhaus made.

on the one hand, a bomb disposal robot would be kickin' rad.

On the other, it'd turn into that scene from the IT crowd.

Perhaps have this replace sitting in mech so the pilot is hypothetically drooling somewhere sorta vulnerable no matter how cash the mech is.

Also making mechs mobs would make them less snowflake.

this sounds like a really hacky solution.
i'd prefer something using buckling and relaymove() tbh.
