Genetics access

Genetics as it is right now on the /tg/station map is split into two separate rooms. The first room contains the cloner, the second contains the actual genetics part.

What I propose: All medical staff should have access to the first genetics room containing the cloner. While only geneticist and the CMO can enter the second room containing the actual genetics.

No the point is you shouldn't have to break a window AS MEDICAL A STAFF to clone someone. How are you suppose to justify that by RP-standards "A medical doctor has to break down the window to clone somebody. He's also a doctor but that doesn't mean anything because he doesn't have access"

I do think redesigning Genetics so that the cloning area is public access (or at least with MD access) would be a good change.

As a Geneticist, I would HATE this change. The second I let ANYONE into the clone room, they try to clone the body themselves and will happily loot the corpses, regardless if they can be cloned or not. The AI and CMO can help if there are no geneticists, and if even those are not present, just unleash your inner greyshirt and break in.

If the cloner were made public/medical doctor access, it would be better for the geneticist to ignore it entirely and let the person delivering the corpse handle the procedure. When the AI bolts open or sets EAO on the airlock, things get chaotic in that room.

It seems rather stupid to me if the reasoning behind not giving doctors cloning pod access is 'because they can just break the window.' I mean, so can every other job, its just that the doctor probably has a hell of a lot of a better reason to be in there in the first place.

In my experience as an MD/chemist/whatever, the geneticst is either:

nonexistant
fucked off with his new super powers
too busy on the dna modifier to notice the pile of corpses at the door
braindead


Besides, the only people who feel the need to check corpses for sick loot are either antags or assholes.

Cloning needs to be under a second access requirement because otherwise people will loot the corpses even more than they already are.

I like the idea of moving genetics to science and making cloning the CMO's primary job, but I understand that would have many ramifications.

You don't want to break the window to the cloner? Few things feel quite as heroic as smashing into inactive genetics to raise the dead.

Its fine in its current state imo. Genetics needs something extra to do. The job is too boring to remove their little cloning side-job. Maybe if the big Genetics update ever happens then it will be viable to make the cloning machines more accessible to medical staff.

If Genetics are doing their job then they should be cloning people whenever possible. If there are no Genetics personnel then get access from the HoP or remove a window.

Even with a big Genetics overhaul I don't think it should be it's own separate job, unlike the rest of medical Genetics isn't supposed to pass around it's main product. In fact I have had Geneticists refuse to share superpowers with me as a Virologist when I got them all the superpowers within 5 minutes by giving them Deoxyribonucleic Acid Aide. The cloning part of Genetics is treated as secondary because it is, the only reason to choose Geneticist is to get superpowers.


The more I think about it the more I think Genetics should be part of Science.

On metastation, all medical staff can access the cloning room and it works great, especially when there's lots of people dying.
On that note, all medical staff also have access to medstorage on metastation. It seems pretty silly that the chemist for example, has to beg for a medhud/belt on box.

Probably because the chemist is supposed to be working with chemicals and not being a medic.

Having a belt to stuff full of beakers/pill(bottles)/syringes is extremely useful, and chemists are more useful for healing people then doctors, BECAUSE they have all the chems.

This analogy doesn't even make any sense.

To be effective at treating patients you gotta go out there, search for injured, get them up in an instant so they can continue doing whatever they do without wasting time.

Nobody cares about chemist and his chems because you have sleepers and cryos, filled with infinite healing chems. At this point any assistant can do as good as any chemist.

Chemists can fill the cryo with a more effective fix. And that's about it.

There's some other cool stuff but it needs people to cooperate which often does not happen.

The reason the room isn't public is that everyone tends to loot everything not nailed down ASAP and run away.
