I just hope that some european courts slam them for this and tell them to stop this shit or get banned from several countries, but we all know those are corrupt as fuck and give no shits anyway
Also, you can turn off the data gathering for windows 7 and 8 if you block those updates.
I downright refuse to move to windows 10 until I can get a modified version that removes all spyware. Fuck that shit

Re: Windows 10 - the message on the tgstation13 welcome page
BTW for the people who want to upgrade but prefer a fresh install to an upgrade of your existing Windows version:
You need to perform the upgrade at least once. This lets Microsoft register your Windows 7/8 key as a Windows 10 key. Without going through this, your key won't be registered and you can't use it to validate Windows 10.
Once you've performed the upgrade this way once, you can go ahead and do a fresh install. Your key might not initially work when installing Windows 10, but you can install pre-emptively without a key and if the key is stored in your BIOS then Win10 will recognise it as valid once it's installed, else you can enter it after installing.

NOT TRUEJust to reiterate the message in case anyone misread it (I did), this does not mean you're being forced to upgrade. Instead it means you've likely already downloaded Windows 10 itself.

The sad thing is there will never be an alternative OS to Windows that could effectively run all programs designed for Windows. Eventually 7 and 8 will go the way of XP and we'll be forced to upgrade regardless.

It flat out asks you how much of this shit you want to turn off when installing.
The government already has every means it could possibly want to monitor every aspect of your life if it feels like it.
Refusing to upgrade to Windows 10 does absolutely nothing to protect your privacy.
Enjoy your false sense of security. Maybe if you stopped downloading child porn or whatever the fuck you do that has you so afraid you wouldn't have to worry about this.
"But it's the principal of the thing"
Stop. You have a cellphone? You have bills and taxes? You're using a public ISP?
Then you've already sacrificed that principal for convenience anyway.

I tried to run windows 10 on this laptop, it ran like crap and because the machine was old lenovo refused to put out key driver updates to ensure proper compatibility in windows 10. Meaning not only don't I want windows 10, but it also represents a clear and existential threat to my laptop.

the driver issues are a problem, by now most drivers have had an update to support Windows 10 properly but my wifi usb adapter just won't play nice and it doesn't look like Sitecom has any intention of updating it

Re: Windows 10 - the message on the tgstation13 welcome page
I upgraded to Win 10 more than half a year ago and haven't looked back. It's better than win 7 and win 8.1. All the cries and complaints I hear tend to be about minor things, which you can easily deal with. Most complaints really remind me of TGS' general outrage over every minor change ever.
Win 10 tells you what is collected and gives you the option to disable it - unlike google, amazon, apple, ebay, steam, ubisoft, ea or every retailer, app or ad provider out there. The upgrade is a good one. Unless you have a legitimate reason (old computer, weird driver, need for IE6), I recommend you just stop whining, get on with it and install the new version. Otherwise use GWX Control Panel to shut off the notification.
Yes, yes, I know Microsoft are pushy about Windows 10. And I'm sure that for many of you it's more about pride than any actual reason to not simply upgrade. You can be as outraged as you want and whine for as long as you find it enjoyable, but the much simpler solution to this issue is to upgrade and realize how irrelevant the complaints are.
As I've mentioned, however, there are some legitimate reasons to not upgrade. Those of you with legitimate reasons, yeah, outrage away, RAAA. etc.
TL;DR:
Just upgrade. It's FINE...
Also you should be personally offended by this post, even if you only read the TL;DR and quote random parts of it and say that microsoft needs to respect your choice or whatever, just like facebook and youtube when they update their design...

Re: Windows 10 - the message on the tgstation13 welcome page
It's a general incremental improvement on most fronts and is essentially a bit better across the board. It also runs much better than the previous versions. If you want a point-by-point breakdown of why it's better, take a look at something like http://www.zdnet.com/topic/windows-10/ or https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10
It gives you the option to disable everything people find problematic in the installation process, so long as you don't choose express install. It tells you what each option does, what it's used for, etc. It's actually surprisingly informative and honest. That's probably why there is outrage - because they actually said what buttons do, unlike the other providers, who hide this stuff in their EULA.

Re: Windows 10 - the message on the tgstation13 welcome page
That's an unreasonable expectation, unfortunately. All software, including all versions of windows since Vista, collect telemetery data, that's how they know how the OS is used, what to work on, where it fails, etc. Nobody cares whether you wear boxers or briefs or what kind of porn you like. All they care about is how you use their software and what they could do to make it better.Lumbermancer wrote:I like how you moved the goalpost from disabling collection of data, to disabling collection of data people find problematic. No, it's not unreasonable at all. You can disable data collection in W7, I even linked how. You can't do that in W10, especially on non-enterprise versions. Also is collection of ANY data on opt-in basis so unreasonable now? Is this the world we live in? Well it doesn't have to be.LiamLime wrote:That's an unreasonable expectation, unfortunately.

Not even two hours after i started my shift, I got a client whos computer had it's hard drive soft wiped by the windows 10 automatic update.
Something happened, and it managed to corrupt the partition table, i had to restore it, some files were too fragmented to recover.
Far as i could tell, it must have been trying to update the ntfs table to the new format and error-ed out. SMART showed nothing out of shape on the hard drive.

No, i could tell a windows 10 update took place, and it showed as an automatic update shutdown in the recovered event logs. I'm didn't get to be running this place by trusting the client to tell the whole story.

@Goof
Okay, that's all fine and good, but they're forcing an update that has a fairly high chance of rendering a lot of software incompatible and there's already people complaining about bricked drives because of it.
It's the fact they're doing this in a very sneaky way that has people up in arms, Microsoft being relatively transparent with their data collection is just more fuel to the fire.

See, Takeguru, you have a point, but they do as well. I heard their chief marketing officer interviewed, he basically said that they are aware that they are being pushy, but that alternatives have simply not worked. They are experimenting with how pushy they can be, how many people they can get to upgrade using various techniques, etc.

@goofball: Denying that there are issues is silly. It's more about whether or not the issues are understood correctly, whether they are as severe as the click-hungry media report them, and whether they are in fact deal-breakers or just minor annoyances.
- Windows 10 offers a feature which syncs wifi passwords between devices and allows you to share them with contacts on skype, facebook, etc. It was misreported that this is on by default, when in fact it isn't. The issue was that one of the services was on, but it did nothing until explicit permission was given. This caused needless outrage.
- Cortana can be allowed to scan through your email, calendar, history, etc. to make the service better. You need to both explicitly enable Cortana and can tell what it can look through. For comparison, "Hey Google" already does this, without asking you.

Literally.iamgoofball wrote:Unless your computer is from 2003 and running on fumes with 2gb of ram it can handle windows 10. The "my hardware can't handle it!!!" shit is bogus. If you're on windows 7 or 8/8.1, the versions that are auto-updating, you can handle 10. if you're still so fucking afraid it'll break, google all your manufacturers for your computer parts and look for their guide on how to fix windows 10 issues IF THERE EVEN IS AN ISSUE and do whatever it sayslumipharon wrote:Goof literally what the fuck are you talking about?
This is about the fact that microsoft is making people ungrade without their consent by being sneaky gits.
There are plenty of reason to not want to upgrade now that don't have to do with 'muh privacy'.
What.
Are you talking about.
There are compatibility reasons. There are driver reasons. There are 'all my software is configured and working and I don't want to go through a lot of hassle to reconfigure it it for window 10 because there is zero practical reason curently to change" reasons.
There are also minimum requiremnt reasons for some people, but I never said that, and I don't think anyone else in the thread has said that either.

You're going to have to manually checkbox updates at the least, if you don't want them to surprise you by dumping another multi-gb download on you without telling, or to fuck up all your stuff unannounced
Also
You're not allowed to do that if you're at windows 10 already. They literally just take complete control of all your updating unless you block windows servers in your router. And if you do that it will just spam errors at you and occasionally lock up.
Also, they no longer have to tell you what the updates do.

windows 10 made me switch. I'm on Linux Mint (Cinnamon "Rafaela") now, and it's nice. Friend described it as "More like Windows 7 than Windows 10 is like Windows 7", which is pretty apt. Installing and updating programs is easier than on Windows, and I haven't found myself in want of anything that Windows could provide that Linux can't--Been playing Dragon's Dogma through Wine for the past week just fine.oranges wrote:YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP CONFIRMED BABY

Re: Windows 10 - the message on the tgstation13 welcome page
im on 7 right now and i've got it set to never check for updates, not give recommended updates, and not give updates for microsoft products. what else do i need to do to make sure i dont get forced to switch to 10? is there any way other than the manually check updates option to keep my shit up to date without getting 10 shoved down my throat?XSI wrote:>Safely turn auto updates onDeitus wrote:so what exactly do i need to install to stop the auto upgrade to 10? after its done, can i safely turn auto updates back on?

Pretty sure that's it for now. Unless they start pushing even harder
So far they're doing it purely through their updates (as far as I know)
