Re: THE FUTURE OF OUTER SPACE HAULING
It's not outer space sci-fi but if you want a good TEEVEE PROGRAM to enjoy Altered Carbon on Netflix hits a lot of the Cyberpunk / Film Noir notes.
I recently watched Lost in Space and that production quality was great but the show itself was kinda meh.

Black science man please back me up!
"Number of stars in the observable universe: 1×10^24. (according to Assistant Professor David Kornreich of Ithaca College in May 2017 and the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2015)"
So human brain has around one hundred billionth number of synapses, than the stars in the OBSERVABLE universe.
But, human brain has 33 time more synapses than the number of stars in Milky Way, which as about 300 billion.

Re: THE FUTURE OF OUTER SPACE HAULING
Yeah the Ilus arc has very little space stuff in it. It's the first real "alien world" story the series gets. There's a lot more talk about the wacky biology and creatures present on the planet that I think this season could've benefited from having a few CG representatives of wandering around just to make it look more alien-y. One of the belters mentions "I've seen a lizard vomit up its guts to eat its prey" and they're all over the place in the book instead of just some off-screen shoutout in the show. Without all the sci-fi critters and weird fauna around it's just a bunch of dirty people arguing over some shipping containers. Kinda lame visual.
Bobbie's story is fairly different in the book than what they did in the show. The conclusion she arrives to at the end is the same and the important part so it's not functionally any different. IIRC in the book she winds up running around on mars just doing some private investigation stuff on her own vs. getting tangled up in some local crimelord shit. It's fine. Probably better for TV this way.
If you want sci-fi space shit buckle up because the next like 2-3 books in the series are all about good old space wars so at least the next two seasons of the show should follow suit.

Re: THE FUTURE OF OUTER SPACE HAULING
Riddle me this, my furry friend. I'm about to wrap up my current read, and I'm pondering picking up The Expanse. Is it ok to start with Cibola Burn, given that I've seen the show? What I mean is that you said Bobbies arc differs in book, but that doesn't seem to be significant in the grand scheme of things. But are there maybe crucial characters and plots and events that are absent in the show? Won't I get swamped in new information I know nothing about?

Re: THE FUTURE OF OUTER SPACE HAULING
It's so, so annoying that you can see the edges of a really great cultural universe on the edges of the show, like Holden's parent's 8-person-marriage, but none of it is ever explored or thematically relevant because the showrunners and/or author are cowards. It's almost just age of sail Carribean with spaceships. Amos as characterized in the TV show should be revealed as bisexual. Also, Bobbie's S4 arc was very stupid.
The show is good media junk food for when my brain is mush, but I absolutely can't stand reading it or any other pulpy sci-fi books anymore. Ada Palmer/Peter Watts/Heinlein/Le Guin/etc have me spoiled.

Missed this question.Lumbermancer wrote:-snip-
Yeah I think you could jump in later, the books do a good job of reintroducing important people book to book. Some of the tertiary characters dont quite get the same treatment and you might forget "oh right that's so and so's partner" and whatnot but context clues should fill that in.

There's a name I haven't seen in an age.legality wrote:-snip-
I'm the polar opposite though, I prefer the pulpy style of scifi that revels in the setting and macguffins and imaginative technology. I'm tired of the same "we were the machines the entire time!" or the author's ideallyic fetish-scape being portrayed as our natural inevitable future.
If you look at scifi's roots its inherently pulpy RADAR MEN FROM MARS type stuff. Asimov and Bradbury, etc.

Re: THE FUTURE OF OUTER SPACE HAULING
I enjoyed the books significantly more then the TV show. The show is still good but like most book to tv adaptations it fails to capture the scale of everything I feel. The new season was a lot better at it as they have an amazon budget now but the way Corey writes the books just appeals more to me

Has there ever in history been a television show or film adaptation of something that eclipsed the original written version it was based on?Qbmax32 wrote:I enjoyed the books significantly more then the TV show. The only thing that really springs to mind is Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park was kinda meh but the movie was pretty fun.

Re: THE FUTURE OF OUTER SPACE HAULING
Mmmmm I would argue against Blade Runner being better than Philip K Dick's original "Do Androids Dream..." but I can see where you're coming from and it's a really fucking seminal film for scifi and cyberpunk so I'll just concede that you have a really good argument there.Lumbermancer wrote:Blade Runner and Stalker come to mind.
There's a lesser-known comic-book adaptation that's pretty good as well. The art could be better but it does a better job of representing the core material than the film, definitely worth a read if you haven't already?
tl;dr

Here we go season five trailer. But I'm still confused. In previous season Inaros threw stones while Rocinante was still on Ilus, thus I thought they gonna scrap fifth book completely. But Amos is on earth, and he was on earth when meteors hit. So I'm curious as to how will show play shit out.
I'm on book seven right now.
